I just want to say that, this week (08 of september 2020), this strategic masterpiece got a big update, with bug fixes and AI improvements. 5 stars to GoG, who keeps such an old game updated!
Just buy it, it's as much addictive as current Civs, but with a unique magic layer that many tried, but none have surpassed.
I played this game hundreds of hours in my youth. Bought at GOG just to have a DRM safe copy.
Even now there is a few X4 games which can compete with it.
Including the new reworked version:-D
If you can live with old school graphics you will find yourself an excellent game.
Strategy options, obiously spells are all well made. Races are very differnt so every gameplay will be different. There so much to love here.
So if you like Good Old Games, you will not be dissapointed.
I've played a lot of games, but Master of Magic is still my all-time favorite. The object of the game is simple—Construct cities, build armies and conquer your rivals...or gain enough power to cast the Spell of Mastery. However, there are many paths to victory and a few wrinkles. High Men or Orcs cities will give you solid army units, but Elves will produce more magic power. Strengthen your armies with Life spells, summon powerful creatures with Nature magic, or just destroy enemy soldiers with Chaos. Each time you play you can choose another combination of fantasy race, magic and abilities, making the game different each time. Use Death magic to help the Orcs conquer the Halflings...or the other way around! Recruit Heroes and create magic items for them, explore the alternate plane of Myrror...
In summary, it could take years to explore and master all this game has to offer. Anyone who likes turn-based strategy, or anyone who wants to conquer a fantasy world with magic and sword, should definitely check it out.
Like civilization, with the fun of casting spells that effect the globe, heroes to level, armies to build, cities to develop, artifacts to make, and other powerful wizards to compete against. I true labor of love from the man who also brought the classics MOO & MOO2
This would have to be my favorite game I have bought off GOG. It is basically Civilization, but with magic instead, and I reckon it's better. Creating your own magical weapons for your heroes to use is one of the best aspects of the game, and if you want gameplay over graphics, then buy this game!!
