Sui Generis

A decade and a half after its release, there is still no other game that plays quite like Master of Magic. It features city and empire management with depth comparable to Civilization, heroes with special abilities that grow with experience and enchanted items, tactical combat, and a magic system inspired by Magic: The Gathering. Along with King's Bounty, it is credited with inspiring game series such as Age of Wonders and Heroes of Might and Magic. But those later games lack the depth of Master of Magic: they tend to revolve around pre-made scenarios with fixed city placement and emphasize achieving short-term goals over building an empire. If you'd ever wondered what Civilization would be like with monsters and magic, this is the game for you.

Magic the Gathering meets Civilization.

Excellent, classic game. Now playable and minus the bugs that riddled the original. The game is essentially an interpretation of Magic the Gathering (the card game), right down to the 5 schools/colors of magic, diferences between slow-cast sorcery and quick-cast instant spells and summons, in the style of civilization (cities that need to be developed, world-map, etc.) What the games does is (a) does both quite well (the depth of the magic system is particularly impressive (b) adds a few generic fantasy concepts, such as heroes, magic weapon crafting, and an alternate plane (c) does combat very well. "c" is particularly important, unlike civilization, combat takes you to a turn-based tactical map, where creatures fight it out. Paritcularly nice is the early use of squads (where hit-points take off members) as distinguished from single model monsters. The game can play a bit slowly (in exactly the way that civilization would), but is unique in it's depth, breadth, and flavor (e.g. the undead that actually make more undead in combat; normally flavor takes second seat to simple mechanics). A great, classic game. Hopefully one that will be reinvented again in the future. It lacks the elegance of Magic the Gathering, but is still the best video game interpretation I've seen of what the card game abstractly represents.

Hands down all time favorite

This is the game that originally attracted me to GoG. My disappointment was so great when I found it missing from the virtual shelves that I almost washed my hands of the site entirely. Thankfully Arcanum and the Fallout series kept my attention long enough for these gracious game historians could dig up this priceless gem. It's always been a mystery to me that this that no one has attempted a sequel to this epic. They wouldn't have to change a thing, just improve the graphics and the opponent AI and publish. I'd buy a copy, heck I'd buy 40 copies.

Awesome game

Even after all those years I still can't help myself from installing this game every few months just to experience the game again. I was completely fired up when Master of Orion 3 was released and they said "If this game sells well we'll make Master of Magic 2". I bought Master of Orion 3, a game I hated for the faint hope of ever getting a well deserved sequel to one of my favorite turn-based games ever.

Wonderful Game & Easy to play

I remember enjoying it in the mid-90's. While the graphics are so dated, the gameplay is still outstanding. Like others, I don't understand how this game has not gotten a 21st Century facelift as I believe it would be a smash hit. Thank you GOG for making it very easy to obtain... I had struggled with DosBox in the past and was wary. But with your version, I bought the game and literally 4 minutes later was playing the game! Great for those of us who are tech-challenged.
