Best. 4X Game. EVER!
I've sunk more hours into this game than I can count. It, more than any other 4X game I've played, perfectly balances classic mechanics like expanding territory, researching "technology" (i.e. spells), strategic and tactical combat, and (to a lesser extent) diplomacy. A few more recent games have tried and failed to recapture the magic (c whut I did thar?) of this game, but none have managed to accomplish it yet. Elemental: War of Magic from Stardock is the closest I've seen recently that could eventually be MoM's equal, but even it has a LONG way to go. In the meantime, pick up this game and revel in the joy of playing high men as a life mage, summoning Torin the Chosen, loading him with enchantments and magic items, and slaughtering anything that gets in his way!

Some Games Age Really Well
I am certain that people have already said many a good thing about Master of Magic: its premise, its execution, fun factor, etc. I am not going to reiterate that, other than to say it is a really good game. Instead, I am going to talk about how well this game has aged. People usually assume that the older a game is, the worse it will play. Little things like poor interface, or obscure instruction. None of that is the case with MoM. In fact, despite the outdated graphics, the control interface is some of the best I have seen in a strategy game, even from much newer ones. It provides all the information needed to play the game in an intuitive manner. All menus are well organized. Hotkey support exists for many of the common information sets one would need. There is even right click help available. All told, let me say this: do not let the old style graphics scare you away, by implying an old style ( poor ) control interface. MoM will have none of that. If you can play a modern Civ title, you can play MoM.

Still the Best
It seems a lot of people view this game from the present and are unaware of what it was when it came out in the mid-90s. There wasn't anything like it. And to this day, I'm still impressed with the depth. I've likely played over 1,000 games of MoM and the variability and choice in all areas of gameplay was unprecedented for the day. I've played over 100 hours on the GOG version and will play hundreds more. Truly a classic and a Top Ten All-Time PC Game.

Classic
Is it pretty? No. But still a classic game that has no equal in gameplay.
