In the middle of this struggle, play as Roy, a renegade with multiple talents who finds himself dragged in an epic story where every choice counts. Develop your character and your combat style by choosing among many skills and perks: melee, ranged combat, stealth, or the devastating Technomants powers.
Craft armors and weapons, recruit companions to help you in your quest, and plunge in a thrilling adventure offering a huge variety of quests. In dynamic, real-time combat, face formidable opponents and the most fearsome creatures of Mars. The fate of all colonies of Mars now lies in your hands…
The gameplay is boring and repetitive, there's little difference between the 1st fight and the 30th; the customisation and scavenging is barebones; the music is repetitive; the story is completely uninteresting and you'll be constantly disengaged. Ultimately, there's very little in this game to actually entertain you. Not the characters, the plot, the gameplay, nothing. It is empty and shallow, and you feel bored the entire time playing. There's a reason the average playtime for this game is 5 hours.
I really liked Greedfall, and I really wanted to try the rest of the Spider games, but I just can't make myself go through Mars War Logs. The graphics look very dated, like you're playing a game from the mid 2000s, not early 2010. The UI is terrible: you get quests and often no indication of where to do or what to do. Some of them literally just want you to stumble around clicking on things until the quest is finished. I've had no real sense of moral choices, despite the game evidently having them, and you get companions, but there's little to do with them.
The killer for me was combat. It's slow, it's tedious, the difficulty curve ramps up wildly once you unlock your powers, as though they expect that to make a big difference. Maybe I just need to "Git gud" but there's no real indication of what it is I'm supposed to be doing instead. No amount of dodging, rolling and carefully timed parries will let you fend off 6 people at once in a confined space with ranged weapons. You just save scum and hope you get lucky, over and over again, fight after fight. That's not how you make an "interesting challenge."
I like some of the designs. I'm intrigued by the world. I want to like this game. I've given them +1 star for that, because I don't feel like this was a total waste of time, and I like it enough that I might try to slog it out, but right now I just can't make myself play it. No. I recommend a hard pass on this one.
First step of Spiders with aRPG, and game what is worthy of endure for the story and story alone, any atemps to play it for the gameplay should be halt right now. Combat is repepetive and very often that needed, character customization basic but working, expect loot of backtracking with lot of cheaply made sidequests and pointless mechanics.
My advice buy Technomacer, Bound by Flame or Greedfall, they are improved over that akward and shallow gameplay wise game.
