Maize is a first-person adventure game about what happens when two scientists misinterpret a memo from the U.S. Government and create sentient corn. And that last sentence is pretty much the least ridiculous thing about the game.
Explore an abandoned farm and a not-so-abandoned underground research facility as you uncover the mysteries around Maize, and possibly learn a bit about yourself along the way. Or maybe not.
With a colourful cast of characters and an absolutely absurd world, Maize offers up a unique experience that keeps the surprises coming. Seriously, they’re everywhere.
Immerse yourself and explore Maize’s fully-realized environment, featuring a cornucopia of areas to explore (see what we did there?)
Solve environmental puzzles that get more and more absurd the further you delve into the adventure
Uncover the secrets of Maize’s world, as you try and figure out what it is the corn really want, aside from a very good nap
Meet some friends and enemies along the way, which include a very small grumpy Russian robot bear and an unhinged corn stalk who’s a bit of a jerk
This is a rather unusual point & click adventure game. The humor alone will constantly get you by surprise. You get to explore as you learn what happened. Don't forget you are accompanied by a robot bear that's quite rude. The difficulty is just right with some logics getting a little longer to figure out. Otherwise you got a fun game that doesn't hold back.
For my money (about $4 on sale), this was totally worth every penny. The puzzles are either easy or frustrating because I can't find that one piece. So gameplay-wise, there really is no gameplay. What this game is then is a walkthrough full of really clever writing. Hilarious descriptions, funny lore, and charming characters. The writers on this game should really be given a big budget and tasked to something deeper because other than Vladdy's running "stupid idiot" gag, it's full of great wit and humor. Like I was getting low-level Portal vibes, it hints at something deeper without boring you with the details or forcing into the explanation. I'm giving it five stars despite a few glaring problems like the lack of gameplay and pacing issues (after you get Vladdy it picks up significantly) because for a game I completed in about three hours, it's fantastic.
It's that kind of pleasure you get from watching some good B-movies. It's a linear adventure with relatively easy puzzles that can be completed in 6 hours. The story is funny and has a few surprising moments. The locations are interesting and full of details. The sense of humor can be annoying at times but is acceptable. There is something in this game that makes you finish it. If you liked Stanley's Parable you should definitely try it.
The game is really fun, except for a couple problems. The main one is that often you have no idea what you need to do. The character offer no clue most of the time. Besides that the game is fun , real high production value, characters with lots of charm and personality. I want to see more of this devs.
Frankly, I don't get how all the muppets around here can give this game 5 stars. It's far from worthy of such a high rating. Don't get me wrong, the game is good, but that's ALL it is: JUST GOOD.
It has some clever-ish writing, some decently funny dialogue, some amusing little puzzles, and I'll admit that the late-game bits have some nice li'l surprizes that're both clever and entertaining. But all in all, the game isn't that great.
For one, it's horribly poorly optimized. This's probably due to the developers' choice of engine. As anyone with even one fraction of a functioning brain knows by now, the Unreal 3 engine is one of the absolutely WORST engines on the market today, in no small part because of its extremely poor optimization.
There's also the issue that you can't change the controls in the game. AT ALL. Seriously. What the hell, Finish Line?! How could you miss something THAT obvious?!
Adding to that, there's also no option for having non-cutscene captions, so if you've got a hearing impairment, you're gonna miss out on A LOT of funny dialogue during the gameplay.
Not to mention the issue that you can't view the extras/collectables you've collected during the gameplay without loading your game. So yeah. There's no "Extras" section on the main menu screen. None whatsoever. How could you have missed that? I mean, come ON.
Then, of course, we come to the absolutely biggest issue I have with the game: replayability. Granted, not all games are meant to be replayed over and over again, but if your game can't be replayed at all without severely diminishing its overall impact, then that game is a pretty spectacular failure as entertainment. I wouldn't have minded the non-replayable nature of Maize if it hadn't been so bloody short! Barely six hours, and then it's done. And that's WITH a 100% completion ratio as well!
So all in all, it's a nice li'l morsel of a game. But for the love of dogs, DO NOT believe all the senseless fans gushing about 5/5 ratings!
