The return of a legend

Well-researched, fun gameplay, witty and soulful dialogue - Mafia laid the foundations for the successful narrative driven games to come. It offers an authentic environment, a true to life mob war and the believeable struggles of a man who lost everything, yet left behind a legacy that few men in his position could earn. Although the gameplay has been outdone by Mafia II in terms of stealth mechanics and the destruction of lights, the rolling mechanics and the level designs still offer shooting fans a few thrills. Both the cars and the guns will offer everyone visual treats to enjoy. Historians will lap this up. Mafia III could have learned a thing or two about character depth, as rich as the story is. The characters of this game are class and the drama is certainly entertaining. Thank you GOG for hosting this groundbreaking title.

From a driving perspective..

Mafia is one of the few games I played through two or three times. The story, characters, I remember it being labelled as "delivering on what GTA promised". The world in it is alive, there's always something going on that creates atmosphere, just seemingly because the NPC's actually do their own thing. That alone is great, but the one thing that stood out for me was the driving. This game features an awesome way of switching between steering wheel and mouse and keyboard, that works flawlessly. The moment you get into a car, and move your steering wheel more than a few degrees (I still have the red Logitech Momo Force I used then), the game switches to steering wheel input, and the force feedback (which is way up there in terms of believability and realism) just comes alive. Stop the car, get out, start working with the keyboard and mouse for normal third person moving and shooting, and the steering wheel switches off again. I spent hours just driving around the city, enjoying the feel of the different cars, the different surfaces, and the scenery. You can stop and get out anywhere, get on a bus, get out wherever else, and even steal another car if you saw something that looked nice. Highly recommended, it beats any other game that tried to deliver on "open world, good story, good driving physics". Haven't played anything like it since, glad it's going on modern OS's!

Wow

How did I not buy this back in the day! Its just so much fun to play. The car chases with the cops is too much fun. I'm all about free ride I can spend a lot of time building up my money and then switching to hilarity! I love escaping a chase on the elevated train and if your really wanted they will follow you from station to station! I may sound old but they really don't make these kind of games anymore with the immersion. Then there is the story which I haven't gotten into fully... its a Must buy

Still nice to play

This game looks nice even in 2018. Very interesting story, but rather short. Only a few activities beside the main story and they are rather crazy and unrealistic.

Great game, missing soundtrack

It's a great game, difficult but good. However part of the experience (I palyed it when it was new, bought this for nostalgia) was the soundtrack. That's completely missing which isn't good. Overall, it's a good experience but not great.
