The godfather of videogames

Mafia City of Lost Heaven is one of the best games I'v ever played all around. The story is superb It's nothing earthshakingly original, the rise and fall of an antihero who starts climbing the ranks of a criminal organization. Yet it's so well narrated that the elements that can be considered generic get totaly overshadowed by the hole. This situations the player get's thrown into, along with very detailed car handling and very sharp shooting mecanics delivers a excepcional experience. You can really belive that you are a 30' gangster shooting your way out of an anbush in a gas station on the middle of nowhere or speeding away from the police. In conclusion, great characters , story and gameplay make this game a must play for anyone who enjoys 3rd person shooters or is a fan of great stories.

Great game, not so good release

Mafia I is one of my favourite games. Too bad this release is bringing the experience down. Frequent segfaults (mainly during quitting, but some in-game too) and absence of car radio music (I'm not complaining the original is gone, I'm complaining there is NONE) - as the game is 1/2 shooting and 1/2 driving, I've to substract 2*. The intelligence of NPCs is fairly good at release-time-measurements, today it seems weird. Police will sometime fine you for going 2kph over the speed limit, sometime they won't see 20kph over. They mind driving through red light, but they don't mind driving through people. Your mates will often go through your firing zone. But when you get your Random Number God pleased, enjoy this linear story game - as you would a movie. And prepare for some tears...

Good game

I first played this when I was younger and the locations were real in my mind. I still love it. I don't get the criticism about the gameplay. I remembered replaying the gas station mission because I enjoyed the shooting because of some implacable, weird tactility it had. The story is great. It's better than 2, and far better than 3. There's a lot of choice. There's all the spraying up enemy cars in free roam you could want. It's a good time. Play it.

Attention potential Spyware / Malware

2K has retroactively changed their EULA. Now they collect literally anything on your computer (including but not exclusively visited websites or payment information for example). Not sure if they are also installing rootkit like software in the gog version like they do in non gog versions. gog should consider banning all 2k games because I dont think that their EULA complies with gogs vision...

Broguht back from the grave!

After so many years of people requesting 2K to sell this game digitally we finally have it on GOG! I bought this game on the XBOX, and it was one of my favorite ones. The graphics were very impressive at the time, and they managed to create a city that feels very alive through small details like being able to take the train, having to respect transit rules while driving, going to a gas station to refuel the car, etc. The open world feels great, full of small details that make you see how much efforts the developers place into this game. Then we have the story. There is a reason why this is still consider the best Mafia game to date. It is engaging from beginning to end, and that with interesting shooting mechanics made it a master piece of its time. I completely recommend anyone interested in classics to get this game. As a side note, since the song licenses already expired GOG had to remove them from them from the game for being able to sell it digitally. This is a shame, but it was that or just not getting the game at all. There are still some online tutorials, though, for adding the songs back into the game.
