Description
Your mission: colonize new worlds on distant planets. As the Mission Commander, you and the Mechanized Assault & Exploration (M.A.X.) force under your command are the first ones in. Mining stations, power plants, tactical combat vehicle factories, habitats – it's up to you to plan and construct them.

The entire new colony? You create it. The resources you find there? Control them. Enemies? Crush 'em! And there will be enemies. You're not the only Mission Commander trying to colonize the planets. You'll have to push yourself to the limit to survive the ultimate showdown in strategic warfare. It's espionage, heavy artillery, offensives, counter offensives and intelligence – all with maximum consequences.

At its core, M.A.X. is about resource-gathering, building, and tactical combat. The game offers more than 50 land, sea, and air units, most of which can be upgraded to improve their armor, speed, and range. You can play as one of eight different factions with different advantages for each one. Discover new scenarios, units and more with the sequel - M.A.X. 2. Now both games bundled together!
  • A level of complexity unseen in contemporary strategy games
  • Choose either real-time or turn-based game mode to fit your personal preference
  • Play as one of 8 human clans and use dozens upon dozens of land, sea and air units

PLAY THIS GAME VIA TCP/IP - THE BEST GAME EVER MADE

First off, forget MAX 2 - It's rubbish and just a minor bonus so that you can see how they tried to (unsuccessfully) evolve the series. But it makes no difference, because MAX is absolutely insane. I bought this game back when I was at University and played it loads with a couple of other friends over our little home IPX network. It was obviously really good and managed to combine the turn-based element with a touch of real-time with the simultanious mode. Now I have bought it again now (after playing all the major strategies through the ages; AoE, Total War, Empire, etc ...), I have realised that this is by far the greatest strategy game ever made (other than chess)! It was so far ahead of its time it's rediculous. Not only does it combine air, sea and land units though stealth units, troops, mechs, planes and naval units, it has a very comprehensive set of vehicles and buildings which all play a major role in building up the ultimate base. Furthermore, there are so many defensive options that you can build a full-scale base with brilliant defenses, logistics and offensive capabilities. Add this to the enormous range of units and clever upgrade paths makes this the deepest strategy I have ever played. The fact that it is turn based is a MASSIVE advantage and anyone reading this that thinks that they should steer clear of it because they think that RTS' are better I can assure you that this will single-handedly change your opinion. VERY steep learning curve means that it will frustrate you at first, but give it tiem and you will see just how amazing this game is. As always, you need to play it on multiplayer to really see how increadible the game actually plays. AND HERE IS THE USEFUL PART ... A team from Northern Europe have released a TCP/IP mod fof MAX called MAX Reloaded. This (if you have MAX installed already) takes the files and rebuilds them into a version that has full TCP/IP connectivity so you can play your mates via LAN or over the internet! Therefore, you can do your bit for GOG by buying the game (and they make it stable by running it via DOS BOX) and then can use the mod to make it absolutely perfect.

The best TBS ever

M.A.X. is my favorite TBS. It's a pitty that there are no modern such games (or modernised M.A.X.). Yes, this is niche product, cause difficult even despite that fact that has weak AI. The sequel of that game M.A.X 2 was not good :( P.S. And as I know this 1996 year game.

Best turn based strategy ever.

This is the best strategy I have ever played. Graphics are a bit outdated, but you don't have to have geforce 1080 to play it :). Has one bug... that in 70 or so turns the game just hangs on end turn. I go around this by saving and loading game once in a while... seems go help me. Game is very engaging spend so be carefull with your time as it just melts away.

Best game-play, by far

I own a retail copy of this game, but I couldn't get those old binaries running on my new machine. This is why I love GOG. While M.A.X. 2 was a big disappointment, the original game is still, by far, one of the best strategy games out there. The turn based element adds a great pacing to the game and you always have to option of building a colony rather than fighting to win, depending on your game type and playing style. The diversity of M.A.X. is one of its greatest strengths and one most games of today, lack, entirely.
