M.A.X. - deepest strategy game ever

I have played this game when it first came out and immediately fell in love with it. None of the newer titles can compare to it. There is ground, naval and aerial warfare, special operations with your infiltrators, quite fun base building and even an OK storyline (bit cheesy though). The best part is, of course, that this is turn-based. Despite myriad of options, ability to upgrade your units, units gaining experience, and having hundreds of units at your command it will never turn itself into dumb click-fest or a rush game. Winning requires strategical planning and thinking many turns in advance. For more impatient players there is simultaneous turn-based mode. Each turn all players move at the same time, but once the action points of units are gone all the players have to proceed to next turn. Another great feature is the hot-seat gameplay. You don't even need a lan to play this against your roomies! I recommend this game to everyone who enjoys thinking and planning more than clicking. Big booms included :)

Great Game, but bugged

I loved M.A.X., but after about turn 125, it consistently crashes due to a memory bug. I was hoping this would be fixed for the G.O.G. release (v1.04), but alas it was not. Still a good game. I can't call it great though because you should be theoretically able to play 400 turn games against 3 computer opponents. In reality, you can play about 125 turns against a single opponent before the game runs out of memory and crashes.

Technical aspects of GOG release

I totally agree with previous reviews - MAX-1 is one of the greatest turn-based strategies. MAX-2 is not that good though. About stability - game in GOG package is ready to launch with pre-configured DOSbox. BUT, it utilises DOS4GW extension which is causing crashes and hangs (game can't finish your turn) after 100-150 turns. Changing DOS4 to DOS32A completely negates those problems and allows stable long-games with plenty of units (400 turns limit as intented by game itself). Instructions provided at MAXsubforum on GOG.

Unique and fun game

This is a review for MAX, not MAX2 which falls short of being a great game like MAX was. MAX is a fantastic game and there really hasn't been a game released that's quite like it. The base building, resource gathering, scouting and combat system are very well done and engaging. The best part in MAX from my perspective is the unit upgrade system - you can either buy upgrades for gold or you can research them. Buying them gets you a flat increase, say 1 more movement point, researching it gives you 10% better stats in the area you researched. There are no limits to how much you can research or upgrade your units. Keep in mind though, the game has flaws, even fully patched it's not the most stable game in the world, you can run into a scenario where your savegame is unusable because the game crashes at the end of turn. The AI leaves a lot to be desired so it's best to play against several AIs. There is a multiplayer mode, but frankly the game is a bit too slow paced for it in my opinion.

A must have in strategic games

Dont be confused with the title "round based". This game is IMHO an early predecessor of Supreme Commander, if talking about complexity. The round based system gives you a little more time to think, and this is absolutely neccessary, believe me. If you never have played this game before, use the tutorials. Use the handbook. Stay tuned. The game is worth the effort. And play MAX. MAX is by far better than the second part. GOG has done a good job. Download, install, run. Perfect. No DOS-Settings are to be made, no patch neccessary, and the game runs very smooth and stable. $5.99 for a LOT of fun. Thanks GOG. Alex
