Description
Adventure and fight in a medieval fantasy open world! Build heroic characters with various abilities, travel through villages, cities, or perilous dungeons. In this world of sword and magic, you can choose your own way of life freely.

As one of the core gameplays, Low Magic Age owns a strategic turn-based combat system and advanced character building. Field of view, fog of war, charging and flanking, spells, and combat maneuvers, you can experience more exciting game features in the fast-paced Arena mode.

Features:

  • Adventure mode:
Open Sandbox World: A replayable open sandbox world with various landforms and adventure elements.
Cities and Villages: Villages, towns, cities, and metropolis of different community sizes. In these places, adventurers can replenish supplies, purchase equipment and other services.
Random Dungeons: Numerous random dungeons, such as caves and ancient ruins, that fraught with danger and tempting treasures (traps?).
Town Quests: Cities, villages and other human settlements regularly issue various kinds of jobs and tasks. To help towns to accomplish these tasks is an important way to improve reputation and relationship with locals.
Trade Goods and Specialties: A wide variety of trade goods are distributed all over the world by region and town. Buying local specialties and then reselling to distant regions to earn the difference is a very profitable business.

  • Arena mode: Fast-paced combat, looting, and character developing experience.

  • Inherited from classic game rules: Evolved from the Open Game License (OGL) of Wizards of the Coast, the set of rules based on the pen-n-paper version of fantasy role-playing games of all time. Plus well designed information display UI, clear prompt of hit percent and damage range, help players to study and immerse in the fantasy world. The innovative combat system, full-attack, covering, in-melee, prone, etc., various circumstance modifiers bring more meaningful tactical choices.

  • Classical fantasy monsters: 7 categories, 100+ classical fantasy monsters. Goblins, trolls, giant ants, basilisks and much much more. Different monsters need different strategies and tactics to defeat.

  • Tons of equipment and wondrous items: 60+ common items, 90+ wondrous items, 80+ enchantments. Slashing, piercing and bludgeoning, different weapons against different monsters. Gloves of Dexterity, Counterstrike Bracers, Ring of Regeneration, Belt of Magnificence, Cloak of Thorns, Elemental Gem, collecting powerful magical artifacts to create the heroic character in your mind.

  • Well designed skills and spells: Fighters own a variety of martial arts movements, not only basic attacks. All of the arcane spells and divine spells of caster classes are greatly improved, too.

About graphics similarity with another game ToME4:

We purchased and used a tileset of monsters/items from the Norwegian artist Raymond E. Gaustadnes (Shockbolt). He made another tileset for ToME4. So, both tilesets share the similar style and a few same tiles.

Thanks to the Open Gaming License (OGL) from Wizards of the Coast:

It has been stated explicitly by Wizards of the Coast that anyone can make a computer game using the open game content under the terms of the OGL. The OGL can be found in the OGL section of their official website, or the in-game Wiki system.

In order to apply a set of rules designed for a pen-and-paper game to a computer game, many rules in the OGL had been adjusted or improved.

Great potential, questionable execution

I bought this a few years back and decided to wait before reviewing it, but as it's still in development ad-infinitum, may as well give it to you straight. The essence of the game is a sand-box RPG with some good things, and lots of meh. Unlike Battle Brothers where you can command a small platoon, here you are limited to six characters on the field of combat. That's ok I guess, but it is limiting as combat is one of the better aspects of the game. There are multiple classes of characters to recruit, multiple races, and they all get along fine even when they shouldn't. But here's the main problems. The world map is always the same in every session, killing some replay value. The Dungeons graphically look like you are traversing a crossword puzzle. You walk across some tiny tiles, and usually nothing happens. Sometimes though you'll be informed that you've encountered something, at which point a small screenshot will break the monotony. In 2024 this is un-acceptable. The quests are ok, and perhaps have a higher variety than what you find in Battle Brothers, but again, these usually lead you to the inadequately depicted dungeons. Where the game is quite good is that it isn't actually low magic, it's high. There's lots of exotic loot and equipment, lots of spells to learn and use. The battle maps are simple, ( consisting of tiles and some terrain), and combat itself isn't bad at all. Tactics do matter here. Overall this a game with an excellent concept that seems improperly executed, the fact that it's still in development after all these years is also not a positive. By all means give it a try if you like RPG games and want some freedom, but pick it up on discount only, it isn't worth the full price.

Fun game with simple but clean graphics

The most obvous thing about this game is that everything is a static sprite. However the game is still incredibly fun to play. I've never played DnD, I've only had a passing familiarity with it, but despite that I am really enjoying the gameplay. Running around exploring the overworld, diving into dungeons, trading, outfitting your characters with the newly found gear, gathering resources, having a go at crafting, improving your party through various attributes - all of these are incredibly fun. Another feature I love is how you can save anywhere, and since its entirely turn based, you can just get up and walk away from your PC without worry. The main reason I'm giving 4/5 is not because of the graphics - it's because of some small reasons: 1. There's a lot of depth, which is great, but it can also be overwhelming. Some features - e.g. picking a path for a character who has automatic leveling - aren't really explained, and I only found out too late. 2. The game has huge depth, and I've only barely gotten my characters to level 5. But it does feel like there isn't a huge variety of things to do. Delving into dungeons feels like the only meaningful activity - and while it's definitely fun and finding new and better gear and weapons is always exciting - it can get a bit repetative. I can usually only do 1hr of dungeoning before getting tired (and then spending 30min outfitting my characters, which again is quite fun) But despite this, I still love this game and am going to go play more. Anyone who likes building different characters for combat, meaningful dungeon exploration, tunr-based combat or in-depth combat mechanics should consider giving this a try.

Lots of fun!

This game has greatly exceeded my expectations. I can only imagine how much fun it will be once it is closer to finished. I have bought a bunch of turn based games recently, and so far this is my favorite. I just wish that there where a few more classes.

Absolutely nails it, in my opinion.

One of the first characters I recruited was a kobald sorcerer who can summon elementals that can single-handedly reduce an opponents force by half before they reach my party. 5/7 would pay for that experience again. Seriously though, what are you getting? It's essentially Battle Brothers, but using Dungeons and Dragons-esque mechanics. If you've played D and D before, you will have an idea of exactly what to expect. Likewise if you played BB/Mount and Blade. Many settings of the game are customizable on a new game start, so you can have BB levels of difficulty where a single mistake can mean doom for your party of six, or if you just want to relax and have fun with it, you can opt for easier settings. Or have a game going of each. Permadeath is optional, a welcome addition. Choosing whether to buy an expensive +1 Weapon for one of my fighters or conversely 5 masterwork breastplates for all of my characters who could could wear them was not an experience I've had in Dungeons and Dragons before, but now that I've had it, I definitely want more. Thank you to the developer for making a fun experience.

Good, but early days

Still in development. I like it - just like I enjoyed Tales of Maj'eyal, Battle Brothers and many DnD games, of which it seems to be a fusion. I think there's some polishing to be done in terms of story telling and text (I would quite like the job!) but it's got good bones and I think will be worth a look again later.
