In the Time of the Ancients, the Worldly Realm was ruled by a God of pure evil, who enslaved all humankind under his Dominion. But fear turned to anger as rebellion grew in the hearts of men - until the dawn of the Great Rising, when the fight for freedom began. After a glorious victory that cast aside the Fallen God, humans dictated a new order... a world where no sin can ever be forgiven and redemption was not an option.
Now, millennia later, the world trembles in fear as the Demonic Rhogar Legion returns from their dark realm, driven by a foul hunger for innocent spirits. Humanity, in a desperate last act, calls upon an unlikely defender - a convicted sinner, rejected by society and cast out of the light... a man known as Harkyn. Now, alongside his mentor, Kaslo, they must travel to the source of the Darkness... to face the Lords of the Fallen.
Plunge into a fast paced action RPG with a complex and satisfying melee combat system where weapons, armor and skills directly influence the enemy's speed and attacks... if all else fails, lay waste to your foes using forbidden magic power.

I came expecting the worst game in existence, but instead I found it pretty enjoyable in some moments. Combat is slow and sometimes unresponsive, exploration is OK (if not a little confusing at times), lore is OK, art style is pretty good IMO. Not a bad experience at all, much better than I expected. I'd give a 3.75/5, but due to the rating system I can only give it a 4/5, although for me it's closer to this than a 3/5, thus the 4 stars.
PS: apology for poor english
I avoided this game for a long time due to the majority of reviews. Never again will I follow public gamer opinion on whats considered good or bad. To think this gem was dunked on so bad makes me realize how modern gamers are the most whining and incompetant lot.
To be fair, yes the game had a lot of bugs and issues initially, but most of these were addressed later on. Whats unfair is the critique to everything else.
Lets start with visuals. My God, for a 2014 game, it looks gorgeous at max settings. There were a number of memorable sights for me. The contrast between cold and warmth (blue and orange) was so good, it felt like I was actually there trying to warm myself in the icey cold. Then there are the weapons and armor sets, which look so creative; their description cards are nice and colorful too.
Coming to gameplay. People complained about the slowness and controls but really, when you learn to 'read' the enemy it is never a problem. There was a satisfaction of hacking and slashing but even a greater satisfaction when you tried a particular strategy against a particular enemy. The bosses uptil the final one were enjoyable without being too difficult. The final one is perhaps the only negative in this game, and it frustrated me so much that i had to use the glitch to beat it (works as of this writing).
The story is commendable. It really got me invested. A lot of it is told directly through the audio notes, but there is still elements of environmental storytelling. All your choices matter, and this is reflected in the end cutscene. I'm really looking forward to playing the remake.
The game is the perfect lengh, not too long, not too short. If there wasn't a word limit to this review, Id write a lot more about how much I appreciate this game, despite all the rough edges.
I had tons of fun with this game, played through the whole thing twice, once as a cleric and once as a warrior unlocking about 70% of the achievemnts. The visuals are amazing if you take into account that it's over 10 years old. Gameplay is rewarding, might seem hard at first, but once you get the hang of it it becomes really pleasant to play. Not too hard, but not too easy (unless you re a soulslike maniac). The story is okeyish, get's the job done, is a decent background, but what is most important to me it's not forced down your throat with dozens of cutscenes. There are some choices now and then that might not seem meaningful but they affect the ending, so dont be fooled. It might not seem to make a difference if you save a monk at the beginning or let him die, but actually at the end of the game you meet him again if he lives and he gives you a quest that unlocks different endings for example The game doesnt overstay it's welcome, it's the perfect length I'd say. You're not being led by the hand also, you can just follow the main questline, or you can delve deeper and explore as much as you want. During my second playthourgh I was shocked when I discovered whole areas that I missed when I played the game for the first time. Another positive in my book. There are some bugs yes, but nothing game breaking, and for today's standards it's acutally very stable. All in all I think this game is very good and I am having a hard time understaing why there are so many negative reviews I really recommend, esspecialy for the low price it's available at now. I think I will be coming back to this title from time to time.
This game is still one of my favorites of the last few years. The art style is amazing, making me think of Warhammer Fantasy, and the music score is top shelf. Every every weapon in this game looks savage and painful, and every stitch of clothing and piece of armor looks awesome (and you will feel badass wearing it). The voice acting is spot-on, even if the writing is a bit stilted; but the overall story is cool.
And now for some critiques. Sure, there are some rough edges and certain parts could use some polish. Missing textures and the (very) rare load screen freeze can get frustrating. Also, if you do not pay attention to the dialogue, you may get lost and not know exactly where to go next; watch a YouTube vid or two.
In all, I say buy this game; support the developers (same guys that brought us The Surge). Multiple play styles, 3 different endings, awesome acting (including the beautiful Claudia Black), gorgeous backgrounds and setting, and a punishing difficulty that - just like DS - can be overcome with time, patience, and some spamming exploits, where possible.
As a nice little Parthian Shot, at least this game is finished, and you don't have to skip the 2nd half, nor do you have to deal with copy+paste enemies. Not starting a flame war, just a casual reminder. Glass houses, and all, y'know. ;)
I am certain this game will one day become a cult classic.
[NOTE: I have played this game to NG++ on Xbox, and NG+ on PS4; I bought it on Steam and GoG to support the devs, and just because I like the game].
Every one of your attacks has a long wind up and a lot of the times the attack animation is very misleading. On my screen the weapon will make contact with the enemy but it will register as if it was off, this makes a game that is built to be challenging just not worth the energy investment. I bought this for a few bucks and that is what it is worth. About 3 hours of game play in and I am done with it, had potential but the awful battle system ruined it.
