Loop Hero

I installed it on Ubuntu 21.10 both from the download here and through Lutris, and it wouldn't start. It depends on an old version of a library no longer available in newer Linux distros, I tried contacting Devolver Digital about it, but they didn't answer. Got a refund. The library in question is libldap. Why would a game even need ldap?

I am starting to really love roguelikes in general, and I think this is a good game. However 1) the pace is so slow I literally begin to fall asleep at times (I play in the evenings after work...) and 2) even with Wikis I find that I am not sure what I'm supposed to be doing. That annoys me partly because I'm older and from an era where we got actual paper manuals that explained every little thing in your interface. My first playthrough I didn't realize that once I beat the first boss I was supposed to go on to chapter 2 by clicking the II button and just kept replaying chapter 1 and wondering why I couldn't get certain resources and proceed with my village building. Still, I've played lots of hours and will probably play more.

I liked the genre and bought the game on sale. It seems like a good new idea for a game at first. But after two hours it becomes very repetitive. The title should have been a hint. In what could best be described as a minigame you watch the hero run in circles fighting monsters and there is little else to do but watch. But you have to repeat it over and over and over again in order to collect stuff in order to improve your base little by little in order to collect more stuff in the minigame. I continued playing for 12 hours in the hopes that building more buildings would make i more interesting but after finishing half of them the game basically did not change. There are indeed several nice ideas for such a simple game and it feels promising but I doubt I with ever play another hour of it.

Loop Hero might be one of my favorite games in the so called "idle" genre. Most games given that tag are- in my opinion- dull and lacking in thought. Games where you stare at the game without having much input, just watching numbers go up. With Loop Hero, though, you're constantly managing the board and you're equipment, very seldom are you leaving the game running by itself for more than a few seconds. Also, I like how often I'm punished for greed. It actually incentivizes playing more carefully as opposed to BIGGER NUMBER BETTAR.

Sat down to play this for ten minutes. Most enjoyable three hours of my life.
