The land of Kyrandia is disappearing piece by piece and you are the offbeat, young mystic who must voyage to the center of the world to break the curse and save it. Your surreal journey will twist even the sharpest of minds. Traveling through a vast, weirdly beautiful terrain, you must concoct potions, cast spells and lure the help of some very bizarre inhabitants to uncover the secrets that doom Kyrandia.
Crafty Kyrandian veterans from the first Fables & Fiends adventure, The Legend of Kyrandia, may recognize their favorite land of giant frogs, talking trees and really strange berries. But this isn't just the same old Kyrandia! Challenging puzzles, new characters, and lots of self-conscious wisecracks from our heroine make Hand of Fate more challenging than it's predecessor.
Return to the whimsical land of Kyrandia where giant frogs, talking trees, and other equally strange denizens make their home!
The State of Mind System enables you and over 50 characters to change your mind, mood and mayhem based on preceding events.
Solve puzzles, encounter side-quests! Kyrandia is a much bigger world than before, yes, even while disappearing for no apparent reason!
Agree with coffeecup. This appears to be on of the best point n clicks I have played, even with the low 640 x 400 res and coming from someone who doesn't like point n clicks all that much. However, it is unplayable on the Mac. When you try to use the swampsnake potion, it crashes. Don't know if coffeecup was using windows or os / x, but you can't get past chapter one on os /x because of ScummVM.
I remember like it was yesterday when I copied my Savegame of HOF onto a 3,5" Floppy because I was stuck at almost the END(The part where to repair....)!! It was my Packard Bell 486DX2 66MHz.
I always wanted to continue from the point on.. and I still have the Disk.... so I got in on GOG but of course I couldn't use the Savegame since well.... no Floppy Diskdrive anymore :D
Anyway, played it from the beginning and still I can tell that this Kyrandia is on one level as Lucas Arts Adventures. The Game is hilarious, the characters are funny and cute.
Yes, you _can_ die but actually at one point you clearly get a sense on what situation can get dangerous for your heroine.
What this game makes unique is the beautiful setting in a magical picturesque environment and also the controls:
You have a vessel and have to find recipes for magic spells which you occasionally have to use to solve puzzles. I think this is a great feature which I absolutely love!
If you're a lover of classic 8 Bit Adventures- then you absolutely HAVE to play it!!
I used to play this game when I was a teenager. Back then a friend of mine told me this was one of the most challenging games he played. So I gave it a shot. I was immediately drawn into the game's world.
More than 20 years later, I played it again and the magic is still there. "Charming" is the word that comes to my mind : it's an enchanting adventure with a very likable main character. A lot of efforts were put into the art direction even though graphics are of course outdated now.
This time I managed to finish the game, as opposed to back when I was a teenager. And this brings me to my main warning : beware if you are a novice player in adventure games. There is a very uneven management of puzzles difficulty. Some are pretty obvious, others are next to impossible to guess on your own. Some others require a bit of general culture, so these are subjective. Yet, this is the way games were in the 90's. You just need to be aware of that.
Something that I enjoyed but some others may not, is the fact that the levels are filled with "red herring items". You are bound to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what a specific item is used for, and discover in the end that it had no use. Sometimes, the game will even go as far as making you believe you are on the right track with indirect clues, until you figure out the puzzle and realize that all these clues were meant to confuse you. I liked that, it is rare in adventure games, even by 90's standards, but I can understand how some people may find it tedious.
Anyway, the game is short but sweet : it's charming, and it's not quite like other point and click games. The plot is silly and endearing at the same time, it is a game born of passion. Fans of point and click games who do not blush in front of big pixels should play it. Oh, and do not feel bad for picking into a walkthrough from time to time. Some puzzles are really harsh like I said, but the trip is worth it.
Several heads and some shoulders above its prequel and its sequel, the second Kyrandia game is arguably the very best graphical adventure there is — second only to perhaps the Monkey Island series. Although for me, even Guybrush can't beat the wonderful charisma of Zanthia and the world she's in.
The puzzles are all good, fun and challenging, the characters are fun, the story is fun, the world is fun, the voice acting the great, the game is funny, atmospheric, and detailed: any action you try will get you some sort of response, even if it won't help you progress through the game. There's even a built-in hint system, and even that's not obvious from the start and you actually have to find it before you can take advantage of it.
Would recommend to everyone.
As said before Hand of Fate is the best LoK of the Trilogy: Nice scenery, handsome and smart main character, many many references and jokes on other adventures and even though the world is going to end (again) the atmosphere is more like Armageddon? Piece of cake!
So while dimwit Brandon was stumbling through the woods and you had to save the game every 2 minutes, bad ass Zanthia kicks some butts e.g. frog monsters in the swamp and isn´t afraid of anything. Yes, you CAN die … but its really hard.
But don’t get a wrong impressions - the appearance is deceptive: even though the atmosphere is easy peasy many of the puzzles are really really hard. Hard to find and hard to solve. BUT - and I cannot praise that enough: They are all logical! So don’t give up when it comes to potions, color combination and mazes: It´s not LoK 1.
