Description
Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?
  • Use the Dungeon Editor to build entirely new adventures and challenges for other players to solve!
  • Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets, and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
  • Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs, and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weapons.
  • Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills, and traits.
  • Pure-blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares, riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors, and more.

Really rewarding dungeon crawler!

I literally just finished the game, after finding it in my back catalog for some time now. It's a shame that the top review is 2 stars as it's really not quite accurate. I rate LoG as a solid 4.5/5 When I first tried the game I thought it was really hard and couldnt really get the hang of it and put it on the back burner. I'm really glad I picked it back up. The majority of the puzzles in the game were just right for me, not ridiculously difficult or obtuse like I dunno Riven, which I had to give up on. I could figure out most puzzles on my own and if I was stumped I looked at a walkthrough after some time. I was really proud of myself for solving a few of the puzzles by myself as they seemed very difficult. So overall the puzzles are great. The character progression isn't that good however. The leveling system is wholly meh, and I never really felt like I was getting much more powerful except with my mage and I wish I had more skillpoints for my rogue as I could never develop her into anything specialized. Combat is initially really hard, but if it clicks it can be pretty fun. It relys around strafing and attacking, trying not to get hit. This is kind of hard to get used to as you would think your warriors are there to tank, but really you're not supposed to be getting hit at all in a perfect fight. It's fast paced so anyone looking for a slower experience wont like the combat. Once I got the hang of it it was fine.

Near-Perfect Re-Creation

A modern rendition of dungeon crawls such as Eye of the Beholder with all the benefits of modern technology. Graphics and sound provide the right ambiance to draw you into the adventure. The challenge level is just right, but there was an optional challenge to skip ahead and endure a lower level before your party might be fully prepared. There were also secret treasures to be found throughout the levels. I enjoyed finding a secret room or section safe from enemies where I could drop extra equipment and return later without worrying that it would be forgotten from the game's memory. There were no noticeable bugs to detract from the medieval atmosphere. This is well-designed and complete game that will inspire your interest in the sequel. I highly recommend this adventure.

Never played a Dungeoncrawler before

It's a fun game. I am no nostalgic. I am in the mid 20's and never played this genre before. I bought it on sale cause it looked nice to me and i wanted to give the game a chance after reading the critics. The game has a very nice character design and gives u much options. The gameplay is nice and fluid , fights are okay ( a bit stressfull with drawing runes to cast spells) but they are fun. The Secrets ( spots hidden by secret switches at walls ect.) are really rewarding and give the game more depth, aswell as the story does. U have to think while playing and it can be quiet a bit difficult but also was never frustrating for me. It's a well balanced nice game which i recommend for everyone interested in this kind of stuff, also u should give it a try if u never played such games. I do not regret buying it and bought the second one aswell which is even a bit better , because it is open world and not only dungeon with a bit more options.

Fun game ruined by cruel balance

The graphics are fine. The gameplay is fine. The onboarding is fine. But the balance borders on cruelty and I don't understand why so many other people are fine with that. I've been playing CRPGs for decades, and most grid crawlers are built on the same principles. It's not that I'm bulding non-viable characters - it's that the game design has a very strict idea of what you SHOULD be putting your points in. This results in feeling punished unless you chose the exact stuff the game wants you to. If our other choices are going to be THIS useless, why are we even given a choice? This isn't 'we're given room to fail'. This 'Screw you for not being psychic'. Here are two examples. I had many more to choose from. 1. I made an Axe user but I didn't get an Axe until I was roughly 1/6 of the way through the game. I understand that I'm a prisoner who doesn't have their chosen weapon at hand, but does the game understand how easy it is to improvise an axe? 2. The game REALLY couldn't care less about your magic choices. After the Axe debacle, I still had 3 more characters who didn't have their weapons. I bit the bullet and restarted with characters whose weapons would appear, because there's no random chest loot. The scrolls are placed in specific spots throughout the entire campaign, which means that your ability to cast certain spells is essentially tied to the map. I get a poison cloud scroll, but I can't cast it because I'm not level 7 in Earth Magic. I play on, putting points in Earth Magic when I level up. MUCH later on, I'm able to cast the spell. I've just hit the fourth map and I've grown to detest the combat. Either move around in an annoying fashion, or rest between EVERY. SINGLE. BATTLE. And this is WITH a good team. The armor feels absolutely pointless in this regard. I've just hit a room that traps me with two poison users. I sure do wish I could use the Poison Shield scroll I just picked up. That'd be handy. Not sure if I want to restart again.

Nostalgic and epic feeling.

I had some preconception about this game. I was excited and a bit terrified when waiting. When I got into the game the excitement is still going strong and the terror only surfaced when I met spiders! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, THE SPIDERS! :D Comedy aside, this game is great. It rewards the player enough, combat is challenging enough and the puzzles are extremely well done. I'm currently on fifth level and I have no clue about how to open the door with the golden lock right at the end of level 3. I'm sure I didn't do all of level 4's puzzles neither...and boy those puzzles left me a good old-fashioned feeling :)
