Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.
The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?
Use the Dungeon Editor to build entirely new adventures and challenges for other players to solve!
Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets, and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs, and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weapons.
Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills, and traits.
Pure-blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares, riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors, and more.

if didn't play the old dungeon master or eye of the beholder games and didn't like its silly gameplay mechanics, then the game is not for you.
if like it, then its a great dungeon crawl. no bugs, it start and runs super fast on old trusty MacBook Air. its not too long, so normal people can finished it in 25 h, its not an ever-grinding 150h stretched hell.
The repetition of the simplistic combat and puzzle levels eventually wore me down. Nothing really interesting to drive the player forward. I checked and it shows that I have 13 hours played. I got about halfway through, and eventually the "been there done that" feel got too strong to continue. It was good up to that point.
This is awkward to say, but ignore that 2star review which has an absurd amount of upvotes. The guy who wrote it is a noob, there is no reason to take it out on the game because they insist on going head to head with slugs. And.. chain beside the door? That's not a puzzle, bro. That's just how you open the door. Oof.
Aaaaanyways. The game is not without it's faults, but it is unrivaled in many ways. It's a game of wits, the puzzles are for people who actually want to solve them using clues cleverly scattered through the levels. The feeling you'll get solving a puzzle is very gratifying.
The enemies. Unfortunately due to the grid nature of Grimrock, enemies are susceptible to being 'kited'. While it does take some dexterity, it's not like the game is flooded with boring hostiles.
Party building is great, it allows for a variety of setups to match the situations you'll encounter. Again, about that review, it shouldnt be taken out on the game because they didn't build their party correctly. At the end of the day, this game is almost like a roguelike. You have two options - start over, or make-do. The game is designed specifically to not punish you for building incorrectly. For example if a puzzle requires a spell which your mage isn't built for (or maybe you don't have a mage), there will at least be a light weapon which can cast that spell. Don't see what the problem is.
Ultimately this is an excellent game. It's atmosphere is unrivaled, it's the type of game you want to turn off the lights and pop your hood, and game all night. The levels are progressive and while there is lots of loot to kit your party, that doesn't take precedence over the experience of making it out of that mountain.
That all said, there were some improvements made to Grimrock 2. While I prefer this OG Grimrock, I do miss some LoG2 features. Being the first iteration, just take this game for what it is. And what it is, is excellent and well worth playing, especially for a fiver.
I played Eye of the Beholder etc. in the past, and also recently, and they're good. I like the environmental interaction, which is better than most modern games. Comparing to those oldies, Grimrock has better graphics, the same gameplay elements, and a wide variety of puzzles and cool gizmos.
There's also the dungeon editor, so if you want better puzzles I am sure the community can provide.
I like the spellcasting, and I'm fine with needing to find the spell before my dudes can cast it.
The downside for me was that there's not enough richness in items, monsters, and spells. There's enough, but not as much as in the old games. Needs more variety in terrain types too.
I'd say it's definitely worth the cash. You should also try to play the old games in this style to see if you like them. Grimrock holds up in comparison, and it's good standing on its own merits. I felt like I got enjoyment out of it equal to my time and money.
First things first ok new game with great graphics, nice sound and easy to get into and then the feeling hits me of going back in time to the atari st and dungeon master.
This game has a very nice retro vibe to it.
I know some people will be turned off as it is not a rpg lite like some new games i can mention but a full blown rpg with heavy stats that do affect how you play and i for one i am so glad if fact about bloody time an rpg for rpg gamers.
In case you dont notice from what i said above if you love your rpg of old get this you will not be disapointed.
