Soul Reaver 2 picks up where Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver left off, with Raziel having just plunged through the Chronoplast time portal in his relentless pursuit of Kain. Over the course of his quest for revenge, Raziel must unearth the mysteries of Nosgoth’s ancient races, expose the machinations behind the corruption of the Pillars, and the vampire genocide. Throughout the game, Raziel acquires numerous new abilities, weapon enhancements, and spells, all of which are critical to the completion of his epic adventure.
Soul Reaver is a third-person combat adventure filled with devious puzzles and kick-ass combat. Fly, swim, jump, and even travel from the material world to the spectral realm to overcome obstacles and conquer your enemies. With over 40 abilities to choose from, no two fights will ever be the same.
Are you ready to bring an end to the Legacy of Kain?
Acquire new and improved Soul Reaver weapon enhancements, physical abilities, and relics to interact with the environment and unlock the dark secrets of Nosgoth.
Play through a gorgeous gothic realm of highly detailed architecture and environments, with an appropriately baroque plot as well.
Devour the souls of new enemies including vampire hunters, Sarafan warrior-priests, and extra-dimensional demons.
An incredible achievement in storytelling, dimension-bending puzzles and art/design. It has its quirks and flaws, definitely needs some homework to be done for the best experience gameplay and storywise, but if you are willing to get invested it is an incredibly rewarding and rich experience that shouldn't be missed.
First of all: Play this with Soul Fixer. It addresses multiple bugs, introduces support for XInput controllers (not in menus though), and improves the game on just about every level.
Soul Reaver 2 differs from both Blood Omen and Soul Reaver in that it presents a smaller-scale and largely linear world. You start at a majestic-looking stronghold, to which yo return several times, and from there, you traverse to dungeons of sort, typically in order to get a new elemental type for your titular soul reaver (wraithblade). The paths between these locations are adorned with enemies, whose primary purpose consists in slowing the player down. The combat is shallow and unsatisfying, and since dying is difficult to impossible, there is little reason to waste time battling foes, not unlike in Blood Omen, where fighting does nothing except waste time and blood. Occasionally, you'll be locked in with enemies which need to be defeated before being able to progress, though the greatest enemy during those encounters is the camera, which often does nothing but obstruct one's view.
The other gameplay element are puzzles, which are typically encountered in the aforementioned dungeons, and these are easily the most fun part of the game. Their design is quite creative, and their solution is neither overly obtuse nor plainly obvious.
Aside from gameplay, you'll be spending a decent portion of the game watching cutscenes, in which our protagonist, Raziel, narrates his own story. Between excellent voice acting, good writing, and a fitting score, most of the atmosphere is created during these narrative sequences. That said, the almost cinematic presentation can be irritating, in that Raziel continually recounting his own story introduces a certain level of self-detachement from these very events unfolding.
In any case, if you enjoy a well-presented story, don't mind repetitive gameplay, and are familiar with Blood Omen's plot in particular, then Soul Reaver 2 is worth playing.
still fun with a pretty interesting story, combat can be a bit janky though, years of being spoiled by accurate hitboxes and enemies not tracking to the last frame of the attack have made me soft i guess.
The controls for this game takes some time getting use to. I had to download a dx3 file so that I can use my X-Box controller. Nevertheless, this game stands out in terms of good storytelling and narratives. One of the best in the Legacy of Kain series.
