Soul Reaver 2 picks up where Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver left off, with Raziel having just plunged through the Chronoplast time portal in his relentless pursuit of Kain. Over the course of his quest for revenge, Raziel must unearth the mysteries of Nosgoth’s ancient races, expose the machinations behind the corruption of the Pillars, and the vampire genocide. Throughout the game, Raziel acquires numerous new abilities, weapon enhancements, and spells, all of which are critical to the completion of his epic adventure.
Soul Reaver is a third-person combat adventure filled with devious puzzles and kick-ass combat. Fly, swim, jump, and even travel from the material world to the spectral realm to overcome obstacles and conquer your enemies. With over 40 abilities to choose from, no two fights will ever be the same.
Are you ready to bring an end to the Legacy of Kain?
Acquire new and improved Soul Reaver weapon enhancements, physical abilities, and relics to interact with the environment and unlock the dark secrets of Nosgoth.
Play through a gorgeous gothic realm of highly detailed architecture and environments, with an appropriately baroque plot as well.
Devour the souls of new enemies including vampire hunters, Sarafan warrior-priests, and extra-dimensional demons.
This game has mindblowingly awesome story and voice acting, especially if you played the other games in the series.
The visuals are great and atmospheric, underlined by a subtle music fitting the theme.
The puzzles aren't impossible to solve and very rewarding.
The combat is done very well since in many cases it can be avoided, using weapons and ways to kill the enemies is definitely a highlight here.
This is one of my favorite games of all times and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Excellent voice work, Excellent graphics, soundtrack and art design that is just superb
Out of all the games in the franchise, it may very well be the best experience the game that plays the best and is the most polished out of all 5 legacy of kain games, but it is not my favorite. But it is worthy of being called the best the series had ever had to offer.
p.s. if you play this game before Blood Omen, theres not much point in playing Blood Omen, SIMPLY because soul reaver 2 is basically everyones recap of blood omen.
I've been investing some time in the "Kain" games recently, and I've gotten mixed results.
First, you need to solve the DirectX issue if you want to play this on Win10:
https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases
Copy that and stick it in the game folder, and the game works right. GOG should have done this in the first place...
Anyway, this game is a real chore. Long, dragegd out cut scenes that you cannot skip seem to be the biggest complaint. Yes, the story is lovely and all but let's be real about this: we play video games to play them. At least that's what I do. The story should be integrated in the gameplay, and games like this come across as pretentious when the first 45 minutes of the game is spent watching videos. This has been an unfuriating part of how video games have evolved, to the point where with some games, like this one, actually playing the game is secondary to the screenplay. One scene took so long that my controller went into sleep mode. Not a good sign.
I am pretty disappointed. At least I fixed the bug, but in the end, who cares? Same points are 1 hour apart and the majority of your time is spent "with the story" and the rest of the gameplay is shallow and boring. I'm moving on.
For hard core fans only.
If there's one thing every fan of the series will talk about is how great the story is. Because it really is. All the characters are memorable and the voice acting is absolutely superb. Frankly, going to YT and simply watching a compilation of all the cutscenes works great.
I say that because the game certainly shows its age. I've first played it back in 2004 or so and while certainly better than the first Soul Reaver, the game could drag on in certain parts. Also, while the cutscenes are memorable, they are also unskippable. So, after going through one, you'll definitely want to save, otherwise you'll have to sit through it again next time you play.
If you never played any of the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver games, it's tough to sell it to you because, as I said above, the selling point is the plot + voice acting, which you can watch online.
