A different type of game

a point and click mystery game. Pros: great voice acting, really detailed and interesting characters, interesting animation, great story Cons: probably will need a walkthrough guide to beat it, sometimes difficult to navigate to sub-areas I wish I had more time to figure out puzzles and go through the details of the game. Unfortunately, you're on a time constraint because certain events happen regardless of what you do.

A “must have” adventure game

Echoing what has been said by previous reviewers, The Last Express is the pinnacle of story-based gaming. I hadn't played this in years but had fond memories of it. After getting it on gog.com I was shocked at how great it was. Unlike most games in this genre, TLE shies away from impossible/nonsensical puzzles. Solutions can always be solved by contemplating how one should act in reality, which makes the more challenging bits extremely satisfying. Pulling you through the experience is the wonderful story which creates a vibe of high-adventure. It's a bit like Indiana Jones meets James Bond. The game probably takes about ten hours to complete (if you already remember the solutions), but the writing and unique “real-time” aspects provide for great repeat plays. This is actually one of the only adventure games I felt compelled to finish multiple times! This is a bit plus and testament to how immersive the game environment and story is. Don't be surprised find yourself with a hankering to revisit the Orient Express' final voyage time and time again.

Great game - but now without flaws

This game is a masterpiece. A historically accurate, atmospheric, intriguing and interesting masterpiece. But keep in mind that it was made in 1997. The art nouveau style is actually still quite pretty, so the graphics are okay. The problem is back then games used to be hard and actually quite hard to learn the basics. User interface can be problematic, at first. Combined with the nature of the game, real time simulation, prepare to spend time up to an hour feeling lost and confused. After that, it's amazing and definitely worth it. Just don't expect to jump right in. I give it five stars, definitely worth the money here. An unforgettable experience!

Absolute Masterpiece

I cant believe this game has been hiding from me all these years its an adventure masterpiece in every sense of the word. The fact that it is played in real time is just awesome and something i havent seen before in an adventure game and ive played many dating back to the good old atari ste days although i was very young at the time. The clock feature works perfect for the game with it being real time, the characters, acting, voices, atmosphere, music, story..the whole game is just a work of art...anyone saying otherwise just doesnt get it i guess...if only they made games like this these days!!

Mixed feelings

This game tries a unique approach to adventure games and succeeds about as best as it possible could given the lofty goal. You're a passenger on the Orient Express for 5 days and events progress in real time. Certain things can only be done at certain times. It leads to interesting situations where you suspect something is up by following people moving around suspiciously. A very Hitchcock feel. Now, the bad. -Most of the game there is nothing to do but sit around and wait, there is a rewind option but no fast forward. - Fussy hotspot clicking. In two spots, even with a walkthrough knowing there was an item hotspot there, I had extreme difficulty finding stuff. The starting cabin is the worst offender. Vital objects that need to be used early on are located there and finding them is a click chore. Just read a FAQ to discover all the items you need in your cabin at the start. Trust me. -Exploration is limited. There are only 5 train cars, and 90% of the game takes place in only 2 of them. Get used to that dining car, and lots of locked doors. The game is worth looking at as a unique experiment. Way too many things drag down the final product though. They had to limit the area (only 2-5 train cars) and events (there are only about 6 important things to do all game) to prevent too many moving parts from breaking the real time aspect.
