Quite a disappointment.

Gameplay-wise, this is a simple point-n-click fare, classic in every sense. You pick up objects, combine them and use them in certain places in the scene. When you encounter other characters - you talk with them by choosing lines. It's all very linear and plain. The graphics are way too pixelated while the pixels are huge and few. It's too retro for its own good. This has already became a meme. Sometimes, without reading the description of the object - you can't figure out what it is. The characters and scenes are well animated, which saves the situation quite a bit. A few scenes do manage to evoke a very nice gothic atmosphere, but those could be done even better with more pixels. The sound is really good. The music is a fantastic fit, carrying most of the burden of creating a proper atmosphere and mood. The ambient soundscape is very nice in a few places and most scare sounds serve their purpose good enough. The story is somewhat a dissapointment. It's more gothic than horror and more Poe than Lovecraft, no matter how much it tries to be otherwise. It won't shock or be very interesting to anyone who read any real Lovecraftian novels or any classic gothic literature. But it's not bad. Just bland and cliche. I understand that season two of this game is much better in this regard. In summary, it was a great free game (I think it still is if you go to their website), but compared to any other games of this kind out there for a price, it's just disappointingly underwhelming and unexciting.

Immediately hooked from the first minute

I bought this game on a whim because I enjoy point-and-click adventure games, and I also enjoy a good horror story. I didn't know much about it but the preview screenshots looked interesting. I went in blind, but this game did not disappoint. In fact, it ended up being a fantastic adventure game, and I even ended up purchasing the sequel as well. Don't let the pixelated graphics fool you or turn you off. If anything, this gritty style fits perfectly with the theme of the game. Speaking of the theme, the writing and story is also exceptional. It never ventures into cliche or cheesy territory which seems to be a common pitfall in the horror game genre. Combining an awesome soundtrack and sound design, interesting Lovecraftian-inspired story, developed characters, and clever puzzles... The Last Door is full of charm and mystery from start to finish. The game itself is divided into 4 episodes, with each one taking about 1-2 hours to complete so it's a pretty decent length. Plus, there are some short bonus episodes thrown in which build on the story and lore of the main game. If you're on the edge and not sure whether or not you want to get this game, I recommend just going for it if you are a fan of point-and-click adventures. When I play a game, I can usually tell within the first 15 minutes or so if I'm going to enjoy it. Believe me when I say, you will be hooked immediately from the very first minute of gameplay in one of the most gripping opening scenes in any adventure game I've ever played. Be warned though: this game ends on a major cliffhanger and the story continues in the sequel. However, I found the sequel to be just as good. I honestly can't think of any cons which is why I gave it 5 stars. This game was a pure pleasure to play through and enjoy. Highly recommended for fans of point-and-click adventures!

HP Lovecraft meets Edgar Allen Poe

Ok, so I first played this on mobile, but it was so good that I had to experience this on the PC as well. I am not disappointed. First, the game purchase comes with the sound track, which is a great bunch of instrumental compilations. Many games don't do that nowadays. Second, the story, though laced with elements from classic horror writers, is completely original. All the lil plot twists were wonderful. And third, this game literally made me jump a few times. That's hard to do. There are moments where, because of the wonderful atmosphere that is built for you, I was clicking on what I knew I should click on, but did so hesitatingly because I knew something horrible might happen. This game excels on so many levels. That said, keep in mind this is the first four chapters in an 8 chapter story. Part 2 would need to be purchased to complete the full scope of the story told. Also, this game does dive into an occultist atmosphere. If that type of theme seems offensive, then this game might not be for you. Although, it is worth noting that it does not glory in the occult or make heroes out of those who participate in such practices, but rather shows it is a bad thing to dabble with things you don't understand and can't control. Fantastic story telling, wonderful puzzles. If that's your thing, then get this game!

Solid experience with major flaws

First of all, we have to be grateful there are still people doing classic games, opposed to live services and cash cows like Anthem or Hearthstone. Seriously, guys, thank you, we appreciate your effort. Now for the game itself. First the visual side - unfortunately, it's crude to do its job. The resolution is too low, and subpixel hinting and antialiasing is not used which results in really coarse images when you often cannot distinguish gender of characters, and sometimes you don'w know what you are clicking (the fact the game does not show labels on mouseover does not help). This is not Wadjet Eye or Kingdoms pixel art, heck, it's not even Monkey Island pixel art. The audio compensates a lot, creating the atmosphere by appropriate and subtle sounds, as well as very competent soundtrack. The second problem is the writing and storytelling. There are hints for good setups, the story is moody and meandering, but it lacks Lovecrafts brilliance in using the language, his method in madeness. Lovecrafts stories are like magical chants - through repetition, odd wording and strange descriptions, ordinary people and items obtain a sinister dimension and the narrator together, slowly and carefully, build together a complicated and convoluted tower of fear. Sadly, nothing like that happens in the Last Door, the game depends heavily on jump scares that burn the accumulated buildup for mediocre effect. It's not boring nor bad, there are far worse adventure games out there, but there are also far better. Looks Charnel House trilogy as a comparison - that game IMO succeeded where the Last Door stumbles.

Perfect adventure thriller

I have been playing adventure games since the early 90s. I grew up on them. This was AMAZING. The enlarged pixels, the eerie music, the perfect visuals, all contributing towards a chilling atmosphere with great rewarding puzzles. I have only experienced the first 2 chapters thus far, but they were absolutely perfect. Kudos to the whole team for an amazing effort. Can't wait for what's next!
