Disappointing

This game's actually pretty frightening for the most part. The atmosphere is creepy and the scare moments are well timed. However, I am ultimately disappointed with this game for a few reasons. One is the quality of the puzzles. While there were a couple of the typical Adventure gaming goofs of making puzzles which have solutions that don't make sense, it wasn't a huge issue. The main problem is that almost all of the puzzles were so easy that they felt more like inconveniences than actual gameplay. My second problem is that the game's ending left much to be desired. It just felt like they put a huge amount of effort into pushing you towards playing their upcoming "season" of the game. In fact, by the end, that seemed to be their only goal. Sure, there was a reveal of sorts, but it felt more like a setup than a resolution.

Cannot recomend this

An average-at-best horror game in terms of atmosphere (be prepared for bloody messages on walls, endless violin stings, and weird things popping out of nowhere which just stand there for a bit then disappear), although the second chapter veers into unintentional humor. As an adventure game it's trivially easy, making it feel more like a story you have to push buttons to advance than a challenge you have to figure out. The pixelated art style does a poor job of conveying visceral horror and a few gory scenes look silly because of it. It's quite short and the full price of $10 is far too high. On top of this it doesn't come close to a conclusion so you'll have to buy the "second season" as separate product to see the end which comes off to me as an artificial distinction to get a second purchase out of people, which is obnoxious.

Fantastic adventure game

I would say this is more adventure than horror. It's a great game, reminds me of an old Sierra type (think King's Quest or Gold Rush, but all point and click). The genre is definitely not survival or horror; you cannot die and there is no action or enemy to retreat from, per se. I'd say it is more suspense than anything else, but with a creepy "lovecraft" theme. The music and sound are great and really make it immersive. The game is top notch as a retro-style point and click, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes adventure games. I got it on sale and it was more than worth the price of admission. I've finished 3 of the 4 chapters, with them ranging from 30-50 minutes each. Let's just say I'm already looking forward to finishing chapter 4 and will be purchasing future chapters! A+

Free vs. Collectors Edition

First of all: I don't own the collectors version (yet) but have played all 4 episodes on their website. To be honest - on the first look I didn't like the game. Pixelated games are not what I'm after. BUT this is different. The ambients and story are what makes this game this great. It's not a simple "find the right pixel and click on it" like most other games of this type. There's a bigger story behind nearly everything (which I don't tell you now - I don't want to spoiler you guys). To the price: Yeah it's expensive if you consider that you can play it for free on their website. But trust me - when you started one of the episodes you don't want to wait for the latest episode to be free to play. And for playing it on their website you have to donate more money than buying this collectors version (which has some more story in it according to TGK).

Nothing New to the Table

Carlos Viola deserves a lot of credit for an excellent score. After that, I fail to see what any of the fuss is about. The first thing you notice is the writing. It's stilted and flat, in what may be an attempt to mimic period dialogue but instead comes off as insincere at best. Playing off all-too-common tropes of abandoned text scattered everywhere, animals being weird, and an explosive case of amnesia, vast portions of the game just feel forced. The characters aren't coherent and motivations seem to change between episodes. This isn't about an Unreliable Narrator or the mysteries that lie behind the adventure; the writing is fraught with such problems it simply challenges your ability to stay immersed at all. Stuff just happens. Spookily, I suppose you'd say. Spooky stuff. All of this adds up to a storyline that's just been ripped straight from HPL's "Rats in the Walls" and Rob Zombie's "Lords of Salem" between extended bouts of coveting Ben Croshaw's 10 year old Chzo Mythos. Adventure fans won't find much here, either. Puzzles are trivial when not adolescent, and inventory choices make sure to slick your gears as soon as possible. The whole experience was over in under 3 hours, and I'm simply disappointed by it.
