Description
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos takes you on an adventure: save the dying king and stop the evil sorceress Scotia’s Dark Army. Your band of heroes will travel through a vast fantasy word full of mysterious places, dangerous monsters, and hidden treasures in a quest to find a way to defeat the immortal evil enchantress and save the world.

In Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny you enter a world of intense beauty and mortal danger where your slightest move can trigger cataclysmic events, miraculous escapes, or lethal battles. See magical cities rise out of great oceans. Enter the musty caverns of Dracoid ruins. Discover gruesome altars and witness secret ceremonies never before seen by humans.

Lands of Lore 1+2 is a solid piece of cRPG history. It was a time of transition from 2D to 3D, from floppy disks to CDs. New technologies allowed things like live actors in 3D environment, full voice-overs, good sound quality, and CGI sequences. All this was used in Lands of Lore 2 to create vast, rich world that is anything but boring or ordinary.

Should be noted that the in-game text screen can be changed to both French and German. A good surprise !

Amazing

This is one of the best hidden gems in GOG. Great story, fitting soundtrack, and most important the gameplay / controls are suprisingly good for a game this old. It's a shame that Westwood stopped making this games. It has some flaws like inventory managment and customization being a little under what you would expect from a rpg but its masterfully crafted to be full of surprises and overall such a pleasant journey.

Two very different games

The first one is a very good dungeon crawler with nice visuals and charming music, pretty easy puzzles and tough enemies (white tower 3 ugh) and sometimes very frustrating moments (mostly castle cimmeria - that one particular lock that requires high rogue skills and herb medicine puzzle). Wasn't too short but not too long either. I enjoyed it very much. Five stars. The second one... I haven't finished it yet because of game breaking bugs. The controls are really whacky, even when remapped. Graphics is much worse compared to the previous game. I wish this game had subtitles, because NPC's are babbling very quietly and I barely understand a word. The curse is frustrating at times but I enjoyed it, something unique at last. The game is very bugged, at least on my machine: crashing, missing items, Baccata getting stuck, cantina freeze, more crashes during the cutscenes and more and more... Soundtrack is amazing, though, so I give it a 2/5. I'll give this game a second chance sometime in the future and update this review if I ever finish this game. Never played those games, so I'm not blinded by nostalgia.

Where LOL1 succeeds, LOL2 falls short

Though I don't usually like dungeon crawlers, I really enjoyed Lands of Lore 1. The game is pretty easy to pick up and play, unlike many RPGs. The story is fascinating fantasy fare, and has plenty of exciting twists and turns as you fight the forces of evil. The environments are quite varied and just the right size: not too overwhelmingly big or stiflingly small. A lot of care was put into the graphics, with beautifully-drawn pixel art at every turn. Typically I dislike the jumpy movement in dungeon crawlers, but the smooth but fast transitions between grid cells keep you oriented but not bogged down. Gameplay is typical RPG: Visit towns, buy/sell/collect stuff, combat a huge variety of enemies, coordinate party members, explore. The downsides are that I would have preferred more freedom of movement (ala Wolfenstein), and I would have liked to see death animations instead of just splashes of blood. But overall it's great fun, and the voice acting of Patrick Stewart just makes it that much sweeter. LOL2 has some good points: Refreshing freedom of movement, great integration with beautiful live-action/CGI, excellent beginning. But these are overshadowed by some serious flaws. A big one is the story - the first was an epic good vs. evil tale, here the goal of the "hero" is simply to remove a slightly inconvenient curse. The connection to the past game is weak, since all the returning characters look, sound, and act very different than they did in the prequel, and often for the worse. Gladstone, the heart and soul of the first game, is pretty much absent here. Many RPG elements such as coins have been stripped away, so most of the gameplay is slogging through giant, difficult to navigate, pitch-black environments hunting for the next obscure thing to do. There isn't even any combat for most of the game (though section where you fight the Ruloi is pretty awesome). The puzzles also get super obscure near the end of the game, a walkthrough is required.

Masterpiece

Can't say anything about LoL 1, but LoL 2 is truly a masterpiece. The music is just amazing, graphics was wonderful for it's time and the gameplay which invited to find secrets and keept things interesting was stunning
