Description
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos takes you on an adventure: save the dying king and stop the evil sorceress Scotia’s Dark Army. Your band of heroes will travel through a vast fantasy word full of mysterious places, dangerous monsters, and hidden treasures in a quest to find a way to defeat the immortal evil enchantress and save the world.

In Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny you enter a world of intense beauty and mortal danger where your slightest move can trigger cataclysmic events, miraculous escapes, or lethal battles. See magical cities rise out of great oceans. Enter the musty caverns of Dracoid ruins. Discover gruesome altars and witness secret ceremonies never before seen by humans.

Lands of Lore 1+2 is a solid piece of cRPG history. It was a time of transition from 2D to 3D, from floppy disks to CDs. New technologies allowed things like live actors in 3D environment, full voice-overs, good sound quality, and CGI sequences. All this was used in Lands of Lore 2 to create vast, rich world that is anything but boring or ordinary.

LoL 1 & 2

LoL1 - This game is quite good despite numerous things such as the dated graphics, bad and limited inventory system, having to run out of room carrying around items makes selling them for the much helpful supplies annoying, and more. The worst point is that you need to rank up one character in rogue or you may find yourself not completing the game. LoL2 - I tried playing but do not like it at all... The inventory system is worse than LoL1. They make the hud move out from the other pieces and then collapse back in. Its a pain moving them all out and in. You can use a keyboard shortcut to bring out the inventory for instance, yet the way its done is so annoying. On top of that your character physically changes at times so you may get stuck often. You will find it aggravating. It also ruins the game if you ask me. If you read the FAQs then you'll find out you can get SERIOUSLY stuck later in the game by getting rid of items in your inventory that you didn't know you needed to complete the game and so you may never complete the game. I had to really change the controls around to be able to be only half-way happy with them. Unfortunately, the mouse CANNOT be used to control the weapon even though it lets you bind it.

Best Games I've ever played!

LoL Throne of Chaos was the very first pc-game I played! I was awestruck from the first minute, and still is whenever I hop into my DosBox-time portal... gog.com is offering me the opportunity to re-experience those hours, days months of fun, dread & joy - YES, I accept! LoL Guardians of Destiny is rated down & labeled 'not nearly as good' as LOL1 - I do NOT agree!!! In fact, LoL2 is by far the game I've enjoyed the most (even more than my beloved WoW!) Those of you, that dislike Luthers Curse (he changes into lizard or beast form in the most unwanted places;-) are missing the whole point of the game and most of all the LORE of the greatest game (imo) EVER created! Fact is, that the unwilling/incontrollable changes is what makes the game feel so unforgetably 'realistic' & 'frustratingly fun'! :-) With that of my chest, I highly recommend everyone to spend the wee amount of coin on these 2 marvellous & unequalled games.

Wow GOG did it.

First of thanks to GOG to listening to the fans. This is one of my favorite 1st person RPGs out there. I only played LoL 1. But my experience is positive. The best thing that stands out about this game from the rest of the 1st person RPGs is the graphics. To me it had the best 2d graphics. Simple yet colorful. The photo realism or horrible 3d of later PC games thanks to the CD is a huge turn off. Another positive trait is the voice acting. Few words but very well done. All actors did a great job. The game starts off great. Very fantasy like. You meet companions, sometimes your actions matter later in the game, you travel a forest, go to an inn, talk to people, etc. But half way through the game you are immersed into a world of dread. Basically the social fantasy world seizes to exist and you are stuck in caves, dungeons, and castles for hours on end not meeting anything but enemies and enemies.

LOL 1 - possibly my most favorite game

LOL 1 is the pinnacle of the classic grid-based dungeon crawlers. Till this day I mourn that LOL 2 hasn't been made in the same way.

Great crawler but be careful

I love this game, one of the best dungeon crawlers I've played. And it's surprisingly user friendly despite the age. I like the fact that it has a map, and a story, and the story has actual voice acting. Really cool dungeons to explore full of creatures with beautiful art. Different areas have a different atmosphere/vibe, from lofty castles to eerie caves, forests and swamps. Such variety! Navigation is helped by the fact that there's an automap. Combat is quite fun, fully real-time. The inventory/menu system can be awkward to use but you get used to it. I prefer moving the keyboard over and using my left hand on the numpad. The only complain I have is regarding the quests and softlocks. Some of these quests expect you to be a psychic, and I would never have figured out where to go or what to do without a guide. Perhaps (like many older games) it was expected that players would ring a hotline or read a magazine article to make progress. But some of the softlocks in this game are absolutely brutal. I would suggest making regular soft and hard saves, and keep permanent saves for each new area. You can lock yourself out of important quest items, and you won't know until much later. That really sucks when you realise you need to reload a save and lose 6 hours of progress from a softlock. So I do think the game is a masterpiece but I would suggest skimming/glancing over a guide on occasion to avoid softlocks and frustration.
