Description
Northern Canada, 1970. A strange blizzard ravages Atamipek Lake. Step into the shoes of a detective to explore the eerie village, investigate surreal events, and battle the elements to survive. Kona is a chilly, narrative-driven interactive tale you won't soon forget.

"Parabole has created a stunning game of duality, effortlessly blending survivalism with detective work and well-researched history with dying folklore."
- Stephen Turner, Destructoid

"It’s tremendous at creating its distinct atmosphere and then drawing you deeper in. It’s witty, spooky, and achieves an ideal sense of urgency. Weird, clamant and intriguing, this is well worth a look."
- John Walker, Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Setting
October 1970. W. Hamilton, a rich industrialist who owns a hunting manor in Northern Canada, reports several cases of vandalism perpetrated against his property. Unable to find out who dared to commit these acts, Hamilton calls Carl Faubert, a renowned private detective to handle the affair.
In Kona, Carl becomes trapped up in the deep north, engulfed in an unexpected snowstorm, and is unable to find his client —or any other living inhabitant for that matter. The player incarnated detective Faubert, who must shed light on the mysterious events befalling the area.
  • Step into a surreal interactive tale of mystery and investigate the perplexing quietness in the entire town
  • Explore a vast, frigid Northern environment and battle the elements to survive
  • Enjoy the atmospheric soundtrack featuring music by Quebec folk band CuréLabel
  • Experience the tale through the omniscient, third-person storyteller
  • Go back in time with a vintage look and feel reminiscent of 1970s rural communities

An immersive experience

This game is one of the most immersive I've ever played, you really feel the chill with Carl, the relief with every campfire. On top of that, driving the car is extremely satisfying, the weapons too, and few challenges are boring to do. I believe that one of the negative points of the game is that it is so open, because the map is very large but with little stuff, and Carl's movement, which runs very little, which is very stressful in the last mission. But it's still a great game. You can turn off the narrator, by the way.

Meh.

The game flip flops between serious and cartoonish. At times gets preachy in ways everyone is aware of in 2024 - It really is going exactly where you expect the game to go and this gets increasingly heavily handed untill, in the third act, the narrator just explains everything to you and then the game just abruptly ends. Out of 6 hours of gameplay it had a few, truly just a few moments. There were a couple moments of paranoia and gravitas and if the entire game had been boiled down into just 3 hours of that, itd be a wonderful gem. I got it at $1.99, I do not recommend.

Sort of ok, but with a nightmare ending

The game had a lot of potential, but most of it wasted. There's intriguing things to discover and to search, but not so much. Most of the game is just wondering around a large playground. If there just would have been enough time and energy to create some good stories around the village, this could have a five star game. A tutorial of the game mechanics in the beginning would have been great. I would have rated this game 3,5/5 or even more without the ending. It simply sucks really, really big time. There was a guide of how NOT to design a game in a Finnish game magazine way back. And this game's ending was like straight from there. I simply watched the ending from a Youtube video instead - and uninstalled my own game.

Eerie winter mystery

I found this game very satisfying to play, even if the ending was a bit anticlimactic. The world-building is exceptional, and they bring in survival elements just enough to make the world realistic, but not so much as to stress you out. The result is a very peculiar mystery that slowly unfolds in a dazzling winter wonderland, with all kinds of goodies to search out. The landscape is beautiful, the driving mechanics are fun, and the puzzles at time can be quite challenging - the mechanics pad is especially bewildering. It's not the strongest narrative, but the use of ancient folklore is pretty cool, and the narrator has the perfect voice. The whole thing feels like a season of Fargo, and that's a good thing. I very much recommend this experience.

For me, it was a total mispurchase.

I was hoping to buy a great detective adventure—visiting crime scenes, examining clues, digging through documents, collecting evidence, and finally bringing the culprit to justice. And all of that in the atmosphere of the TV series Fargo. The German description of the game made it sound like that, too. But what I got was some bizarre mystery/horror/creepy nonsense. When I found the body at the beginning and the character just picked up the weapon, I thought: "OMG WTF! Don’t touch the murder weapon with your bare hands! It needs to go to forensics and then into the evidence locker! How is this supposed to hold up as evidence now?" Ten minutes later, when I realized what kind of game this actually was: "Will I eventually find a laser gun and start shooting at spaceships to stop them from abducting our cows?!" I did finish the game, but I didn’t have any fun with it. I’m just glad it’s over. I'll still give it three stars. Because if this game is exactly what you're looking for—just a casual horror/creepy adventure with minimal survival elements—then you'll get the full package here.
