A positive KQ8 review

Forget the fact that this game belongs to the KQ series. Replace "Daventry" and "Graham" with generic fantasy names, and you'll enjoy this title as an action RPG in a dark fantasy setting. Even the primitive 3D engine, combined with excellent sounds and music, does a good job of depicting the bleak atmosphere. Most people didn't like the "ye olde English" language, but it fits the setting quite well, and Connor is a properly chivalric character despite his simple origins. The levels are varied, and the monsters' death animations add excitement the rather simplistic combat. There's leveling up and new equipment every now and then that keep things interesting. There are friendly NPCs to talk to and puzzles to solve, mostly of the lock & key and jumping variety. I'd give this game four stars were it not for the clunky controls. You use the keyboard for movement, but at the same time you must control the camera at all times with your mouse. This is, at best, awkward in outdoor combat situations and very annoying inside buildings. Also, maps are very big and important items are easy to miss because some of them blend into the environment. People complain of crashes and bugs, but I had only one crash to desktop in 10 hours of gameplay. Buy this game especially if you enjoyed Blade of Darkness. The combat may not be up to par, but the atmosphere is quite similar.

The Two Weakest King's Quest Titles

While the hate train for Mask of Eternity is a little unfair, it is without a doubt the weakest of the King's Quest series. Aside from MOE's significant departure from the traditional point-and-click adventure genre that King's Quest both created and defined, it suffers from mediocre 3D for its time (atrocious by today's standards) and unsatisfying gameplay from an action standpoint. The mechanics are quite clunky and overly simplistic for gamers who are used to Tomb Raider (which you can accuse MOE of attempting to clone), and the greatly reduced puzzle aspect definitely alienated the series' adventure gamer base. While it isn't an awful game, it’s not a great one either. All that said, I appreciated MOE’s view on the KQ universe. I found Connor's character sufficiently heroic (though one-dimensional, which defines pretty much every KQ hero with the possible exception of Alexander) and what story elements were there were satisfying. Had this been considered a separate type of game set in the KQ universe, like Heroes of Might and Magic was to Might and Magic, and if Sierra didn’t fall victim to late 90’s Dot Com Bust “me too” corporate shenanigans, I have no doubt that it could have been the start of a sister series, albeit an inauspicious start. As for King’s Quest VII, it’s by far the weakest of the traditional adventure game series, as well as the most unabashedly child-focused. The cartoonish graphics, hammy voice acting, and cutesy villains made it feel more in-line with Mixed-Up Mother Goose and other such kid-focused fare. While it’s still incredibly fun to play, it’s not anywhere close to the series' best. But even though these are the two weakest games in the series, they’re still fun games. Anyone who loves Sierra adventures will get enjoy KQ7, and anyone who’s either interested in or nostalgic for this era of gaming will enjoy both games as examples of what the art form was striving for in a more innocent, yet more innovative, time.

King's Quest VIII the Best by Far

I've played them all, from start to finish. Enjoyed them all. Roberta Williams, the only person able to introduce female protagonists without turning them into men with female genitals. Although King's Quest VII may be brighter, it could be because King's Quest VIII has a very dark theme, yet champions virtues, much like Ultima VII Quest of the Avatar. I found King's Quest VII on the cartoony side. King's Quest VIII on the other hand should not be missed. Again, voice acting, King's Quest VII, cartoony; King's Quest VIII captures the chivalrous voice a knight of the time would have, very well done. In fact, I found myself at times marvelling at all the different voices so well done in King's Quest VIII. The control mechanisms, once used to, work amazingly well. If you like the childlike new King's Quest series where Graham is a bumbling buffoon, you'll probably like King's Quest VII better. But if you like the gallant chivalry of the heroic King's Quest Series, you'll be drawn to King's Quest VIII. Check out the difference by watching this trailer for King's Quest VII https://youtu.be/g1dcxn3HOEo and this one for King's Quest VIII https://youtu.be/dk0mqvIPD_0 .

4 Stars...

It'd be 5 just for King's Quest 7. KQ7 has a Disney'esque type animation to the game and story that feels like Sierra was trying to make their own Disney cartoon. I knock a star off because of Mask of Eternity... it takes place in Daventry ... but is disconnected really... the graphics in KQ8 are atrocious... the voice acting is horrible. I keep trying to go back and finish KQ8, but there's too many things that keep telling me, there's better things I could be doing that I'd actually enjoy doing.
