I loved this series growing, but to spend $9.99 on ONE game out of both of them: I'm very disappointed that KQ7 worked and KQ8 didn't. I want a refund.
I like having the last 2 King's Quest games bundled into one package. I enjoyed both of them for different reasons. At 1st I was turned off by KQ8 not seeming very relevant to the King's Quest story. It's basically a 3D fighter game with mild puzzles stamped with the King's Quest title. But if you can ignore the fact that it doesn't really feel like King's Quest, the game is actually fun and addictive.
As far as the bundle, it's very easy to install and start playing right away. I'm using 32 bit Windows 7 and everything installed just fine without a hitch. Definitely recommend this download!
KQ8 barely works (if it does at all) on Windows 10. I've tried everything. I've searched google, youtube, forums, etc. GOG patched the game for compatibility, but it was not adequate. If you're looking to play 8, then don't bother with this.
This was a good game when I first played it back in the day it came out. GOG has made it a HASSLE and agro to play, since they do NOT put the KEYS in the opening pages. SOOO, you have to download the manual, then search the pages for words, etc, and put those into the passwords to play the game, THEN there are glitches from the original game plus those put in by GOG or some idiot programmer. This FUN game has been rendered a very aggravating hassle due to these "security" requirements. It was/is a waste of coin to down load the series, since ONLY the last two games are readily playable. KQ*, a different format, will run under W-7, and backward compatible, BUT, the glitches in the codex make it a real pain in the butt. I have the original games on disk, but DL these from GOG due to their claim that they are playable on W-7/64 bit rig. That MAY be but not so on my Alien ware chamber pot. This is a RIP OFF, IMHO. Based on 30 years of game playing.
"King's Quest 7" is criminally underrated. It gets flak for being Disney-esque and catering more towards children, but "King's Quest" always had a child-friendly element. Even the most popular "King's Quest" games had puzzles based on fairy tales like Rumplestiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, Beauty and the Beast,... I don't see why some had a problem with it here. The storyline is great for me. The backgrounds are GORGEOUS; in my opinion these are the best backgrounds ever in an adventure game. The music is great for the most part some of my favorites are the music for the forest and the music for the screen with the zombie kids and their jack-o-lantern house. The voice acting is great, I especially love the 3 voices for the carnivorous 3-headed plant in the swamp. "King's Quest 7" is my 2nd favorite game in the series, closely behind "King's Quest 6." I never liked the Super VGA graphics of other games like "Space Quest 6" and "Leisure Suit Larry 7," but they pulled it off nicely in "King's Quest 7. "
"King's Quest 8," on the other hand, I don't know what they were thinking. It's a "King's Quest" game in name only. It sure doesn't feel like a "King's Quest" game. It's a completely different kind of game. It's NOT one of those game where you pick up items and solve puzzles and all that. It IS one of those games where you fight and kill monsters and gain experience. I can dig that kind of game, but it isn't what I expect from "King's Quest." Also the game uses 3D graphics rather than the screen by screen thing. I could never get used to the 3D graphics nor could I understand what was wrong with the VGA 2D screen-by-screen thing. They fixed what wasn't broken.
