TACTICAL DEPTH ON THE BATTLEFIELD
The environment and landscape matter in King’s Bounty II. Players will encounter diverse terrain types, directly impacting battlefield tactics. Every battle is unique in its own way.
The opening dialogue scene is cringworthy. It's so unnatural, especially from the male prisoner. Who answers "what's your angle" to the guard asking him a question. Felt like a line from a 1930's weekly print crime thriller. Ya see, Johnny, keep your mouth shut and you'll be a okay, kiddo." It was not good. Immediately broke immersion. And it didn't recover as his very next line is equally out of place. And his appearance is out of place too. His hair and beard are very modern in style. I think this is a very poor opening for the game. I literally had to stop playing and begin a review to ensure I authentically captured the feeling the opening scene felt like.
I literally just heard the "said no one ever" line. OMG. I can't believe this is the dialogue smart people chose for this genre game. Honestly. It's just, how can that pass at least like 25 people or something and no one thought it was this disjointed and atrocious? Anyways, it's pretty. So I'll keep playing.
First off; there is no end! The ending is a message that their is more content coming, but it never did, so if you don't like leaving things unfinished this is a non-starter. Otherwise, it was actually pretty boring and tedious; the story and the characters had zero interest. The battles were good, but not great. Extremely buggy walking around getting stuck on things any person could easily step on. Not nearly enough unit types, and awkward system about not combing units from different "disciplines", increasing the need for more types of units.
I'm a huge fan of the previous Kings Bounty.
This game I feel should be treated as an completely different series- it has a very Witcher 3 feel.
Cons
Graphic is very hit or miss with the NPC's, the frame shutters at times, and yes I wish their was a better way of moving around the world.
Voice acting is very B grade for NPC's-like they are reading lines from their hand... but for me, I can roll with it- I just need a Mwhahahaha Evil!!! then I'll be happy.
Pros
The gameplay is quite enjoyable, I love how your units rank up and change- it makes you wish to invest with your starter units.
The world is stunning in a skyrim/witcher way.
Music is nice, and the battles are really fun and unique.
Most of the units feel very different compared to previous titles reskins-(They do that with this title also very little though-Eagles- Fire Eagles)
Otherwise- if you see this on sale, I'd give it a gander, once you are past the frustrating parts- you'll enjoy the game.
Solid 3/5 not all bad, the tactical battles are decent even know they can get a bit repetitive. Didn't see any bugs, some of the side quests and locations are interesting along with the puzzles. Liked some of the units and carrying an army 'feel' Graphics are alright.
What's bad about it. Terrible main story, don't bother and ends in dlc bait. Voice acting is...functional game play gets very repetitive towards the end and overstays it's welcome.
Over all it's an average game that has some fun in it to fill a gap but don't expect anything more then time filler till something better comes along. Get it on sale when it's much cheaper as it's a joke at it's asking price.
For the most part i really liked the game. The combat is good and the story/quests are fine as well, albeit nothing to brag about. I agree that the horse movement is a bit clunky so i only used it when traveling from point A to B on roads, not when exploring rough terrain looking for loot, but i think that fits thematically so i didnt really mind it. I really disliked the paladin (started with it and switched to warrior after like an hour - she just has the most obnoxios personality, enjoyed the story/quests alot more after). The biggest issue for me was that you got locked into a choice if you follow a matching morality path. There are also a couple QoL changes that i would have liked to see. You can only track 1 quest at a time, only have 1 (unnamable) marker on the map, no sorting system for inventory ...
Overall i really liked the game but it certainly has some issues. I have played all the previous games in the series and i dont get the hate this game gets. I really liked the previous games to, though to be honest they were all just a copy of the legend with a new storyline and a couple of new units. Say what you will about this one at least its an actual new game.
