Ambitious RPG, great qualities and flaws

Review as 1.08 version. To summarize KoA-RR as much as possible, it'd be more or less like oblivion with less in-depth mechanics and WoW-like graphics. However, the game has interesting qualities and flaws alike. Performance wise, I'm playing on a Ryzen 5 3600, 1050ti and 16gb, runs fine, although I can't see the FPS on GOG, feels 60 FPS or more, likely the patches solved performance issues people mentioned. Another important feature changed after patches is how the area changes the leveling (not of chests loot) everytime you enter, instead of the first time. This is quite good in Amalur for two reasons: first, the level of the area is capped, second because of the massive ammount of content, you'll hardly manage to do everything that area had to offer, so the dinamic leveling gives you a chance of revisiting while keeping it worth your time. Exploration is surely one of the biggest qualities of this game. A vast open world game, lorestones scattered around to give you some good lore, sometimes even in form of poems and songs, which is really nice and fitting for some cultures. Plus, they give you XP and permanent bonuses for finding all of the same set. However, there is a big flaw that hinders the exploration, that you can't jump unless on certain platforms, hence the movement suffers a lot by that. Quantity of content is absurdly big, more than most of open world games. The quality of them is varied. Some quests are bland, but many quests are really good and interesting, and so are the NPCs. I've never met a character unvoiced so far, and most quests have a good background to mask well the chores themselves. Sadly there isn't a first person camera, and while there is a day/night cycle, there is no clock and the night is too bright, you might think it's day. Plus no character sheet with summary of status (like Morrowind's). Overall, I'm hopeful for a sequel that THQ Nordic will keep the amazing qualities and work on some of the most important flaws.

5/5 as a game, 2/5 as a remaster.

The game by itself is simply awesome. Quests are everywhere and every single one(even the side-quests) offers a player-chosen outcome (like Fable). Also some notoriously buggy quest were fixed. Lastly, this game offers an insane amount of content (for those wondering about the time/$ ratio). The combat is by far the game's highlight, you can mix and max between many active and passive skills to create your own fighting style. Also, the new hard mode fixed the original game's greatest flaw which was its lack of difficulty. Having said all that for those who have played the game on its previous iteration, this "remaster" does not offer much apart from a(n arguably deserved) new difficulty mode, some bug fixes and being DRM free (on GOG at least), hence the low score. TL:DR if you have played this game before the "remaster": 2/5, otherwise: it's a pure 5/5.

Black Map Bug

Never played this before. Heard a lot about it, though. Played it for about 50h, enjoyed it. And... then was struck by the bug that makes your local map go black. Reloaded my last save-game, about 10h before... and the bug came back. Not sure how prevalent this is, but I saw peeps on the PS4 cry about the same bug (also for re-reconing, just to be clear.) Wait for the bug-fixes. I.e. do NOT buy the Fate edition. I did. And I am sad that I did.

More Like This!

I'm not opposed to the idea of WRPGs, but one thing that usually pushes me away is lousy combat; it's typically, clunky, obtuse, and doesn't feel good at all. This has fast, fluid combat that resembles a scaled-back Devil May Cry or God of War. I don't know why this kind of thing isn't more common, but hey, we have it here, and it's spectacular. On top of that, your classes may be the usual brick, skulker, and spell-slinger, but the game's pretty loose with them; you can easily combine, plate mail with a staff and longbow, or whatever else floats your boat. Skills are pretty easy to mix and match, too, and the only thing resembling a formal class is something you can switch any time in the menu that just gives some great stat bonuses. It's very playful in its approach, and encourages you to experiment, because it isn't back-breakingly difficult; it just wants you to have fun. The writing starts off pretty badly, cramming so much lore down your throat you feel like your lungs are going to burst, and none of it is really explained at all. It's the usual fantasy sludge you've seen a million times, but you don't know who or what any of these things are. Once you get past that, it gets pretty philosophical, and not all is as it seems, but in an interesting way, not the usual, "HEY LOOK HOW TWISTY OUR PLOT IS YOU'RE SO SURPRISED RIGHT!?" Since experience is pretty generous, you're also free to explore these story arcs or not, according to your interest; I skipped out on at least three entire factions, and I easily hit the level cap by the end. I found myself really liking some of the characters, too. It's a much longer game than I usually want to play, but it kept me engaged throughout the whole thing... though maybe get the basic version, because I was not a fan of the Fatesworn expansion.
