Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

So good - so flawed

It is a fantastic RPG. Bought it a few days ago in my search for getting really immersed and it is absolutely worth it. But there are sooooo many flaws: 1) that crappy UI (e/f/esc/tab/cursor) hold, press once 2) hateful inventory (almost of course nowadays) 3) spawning NPC´s/quests is really messed up 4) the lock on... 5) main quest vs side quest progression - because most of the side quests early on i thought i should/could solve them - wrong - follow main quest at least until camp...(would be at least 20 hrs less - and the lock on....i had 5 very unenjoyable encounters, after that: pretty much all unenjoyable because of overpowered - and learned the mechanics certainly :)) This is major shitwork!!!! But so are the rest of things that give you an incredible game. I feel sad for it, because i think that the studio will not improve of things, but squeeze shit out of new equipment only for fancy looking graphics (as most other devs do...) but will not adress for what we really want: A CAMPAIGN THAT LASTS 1000 hours to finish, at least - hold your word and give us some realism here XD, ah, and two handed axes :D

So immersive!

I'm currently on my second playthrough - this time with all the DLC. I know I'll get lynched, but I prefer this over the Witcher 3! Pros: Super immersive. Great story. Fantastic music. Good graphics. Over a 100 hours of content. Educational and interesting setting. Cons: Performance can be rough. Fighting multiple enemies at once is very clunky. The yellow dot in the screen is a annoying - I used a mod to change it to something more sublte. You can save the game by sleeping on a bed, reaching a checkpoint or otherwise by using a potions which can cost you some Groschen - personally I used a mod to get free saves, although the idea behind it is nice.

GameplayFrustrations + NetworkConnection

I will start by saying that I am not too far in the game yet and, while there are certainly a lot of positive things to be said about it, ultimately a lot of the gameplay and its design left a lot to be desired so far and it started right away during the first hours of the game. After the open introduction the next sequence is quite scripted forcing the player to move along the narrative (which in itself is ok) but still felt frustrating (you even get “an arrow out of nowhere” moment à la Far Cry if you go too far) - Also noticed invisible walls which enforced the feeling of being forced into a path. Also disliked that some items that attract your attention cannot be picked up such as axes, lettuce, etc. as well as objects that looked like containers but weren’t. Another frustrating element: the live tutorial messages popping up when you are required to perform an action – at times they show up while being attacked. Other than that the reputation system seems harsh to the player (was not even sure if it was consequence of actions or bugs) so it felt oppressing. The saving mechanism is similar to Resident Evil; would have preferred a “save when you want” approach but understand the choice they made. Otherwise graphics are nice but poorly optimized. Runs fine on RX 5700 XT @1080p on “basic” High but relatively poor visuals due to aliasing. A tweaked 1440p was a good middle ground along with the HD Pack! Game can be buggy and AI acting strangely but at least it supports MOD's which is a plus to address some of the quirks that the game has. Nonetheless I support the developers and hope they will release something even better next time and will continue supporting the game. Additional Tip: The game .exe file won’t start if blocked by firewall – allowing LAN only access seems to work – I did not notice people complaining about this but maybe most people don’t user proper firewalls - nobody should have to deal with this kind of technical design from a DRM-free game.

Excellent game

Is KCD perfect? No. But even at full price it's an insane amount of value. Highly recommended.

Uncomfortable realism

There is a moment when realism in a game could make things harder than it actually works in real life. Unfortunattly, this statement is exactly about this game. Great level design, beatiful medieval castles and towns, best forest I've ever seen in games - and unplayable archery (and hunting as well), controversial saving mechanich, given the large amount of bugs (especially related to the physics of world). This things could be easily fixed by third-party mods (editing configs in fact), however it's pretty annoying that this things exists in a native game. Fighting is also not the best. It's realistic from the point of late medieval duelling tractats, but when it comes to large "wall to wall" fights, it looks whery unnatural - instead of "keep formation and try as quick as possible to stick this bastards with something sharp, or stub them with something heavy", battlefield disperse in several duels with swords. Also gameplay is kinda going against the plot. Gameplay with all it's realism trying to make you feel as a non-auristocrat medieval person, but the main character some times doing so srupid things, like a disputing and fighting with son of local lord. This moments ruines most of "realism" vibes for me. Still, the game is worth trying. With some minor config changes you may avoid artificial restriction described before, and even with them gameplay may be pretty addictive. Just don't try to make everything and everywhere, be focused on a specific tasks in a specific time an you will be fine.
