Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

Much to like but the combat isn't fun

Ultimately the combat killed my interest in finishing the game, which is a shame because the world, characters, story and historical background are compelling. To give you an idea of what's wrong with the combat, while trying to make myself like the game I found some autohotkey scripts (that in fairness at least made it somewhat playable for me). One of these scripts handles parrying, which is possible because when a certain prompt flashes up, you have to press the parry button. Clearly this is a highly scriptable piece of gameplay. If a pixel-watching, event-generating script can play a key part of a combat-based RPG, there's something wrong IMO; I thought we'd got past that level of gameplay sometime around 1980. Or at least that that "watch for the prompt then press the button" had been relegated to the occasional QT-event mini-game. I still think the game is worth 4 stars because for many players the combat will be fine -- if so then there's a lot here to love. For comparison, I also disliked the combat in Witcher 1 and I love the combat in the Mount and Blade franchise.

Ruined Other Games for Me

A rare gem in the modern state of the industry. A game lacking almost every complaint I have about modern games while brimming with incredible content. If you've ever had a knight fantasy as a kid, are a fan of RPGs or immersive sims, or are a fan of actual history and would like to ACTUALLY ROLE PLAY a medieval person in a real setting surrounded by real historical events without a shred of fantasy then this is the game for you. The developers did a solid job fixing almost every single bug. With nearly 300 hours and several playthroguhs in the game I still haven't gotten bored. I stop playing games I haven't finished yet just to play more of this, and I don't see that stopping any time soon.

One of the best RPGs

I liked RPGs like Oblivion, Skyrim, Dragon Age, etc but this one is probably one of the best RPG of all times. It is very unique. Can be slow sometimes, beginning is hard but the story and characters are interesting and the realistic world is awesome. Save system is ok once you have enough money. Combats are much easier over time, as you get better combat skills and armors/weapons. Quests are not generic and many have unexpected, complex stories. Played in 2021 with all (very good) DLCs, no serious bug found after 160 hours. I really hope they will make a new episode with Henry : )

It's just not fun...

I think the developers of this game have no idea what a videogame is. It's supposed to be activity someone engages in for amusement, or as I like to say... to have fun. The silly thing is that Mount And Blade Warband does everything this game does without missing the most important thing... "fun". This game just isn't fun to play. Why? Because it throws in needlessly complicated mechanics with terrible tutorials. The combat is needlessly overly complicated... 5 directions to block? Really? Do we really need this? Sure it's realistic and all but it all boils down to luck and reaction timing... oh and high stats because your character is so bad at swordfighting at the start of the game that the combat is literally unplayable. Lockpicking is absolutely ridiculous, the tutorial is dreadful, you use all your lockpicks? Tutorial is over, you failed and you have to pay more money to try again... SMH. OIne of the first quests involves stealing a man's ring. The game heavily implies that you have to steal it... yet I found out that you could just bribe the man to give it to you. As such, the game clearly pushes players to mess around with the crime system which is completely and utterly broken. If you steal something then it automatically becomes branded as a stolen item, everyone and their mother has the ability to detect stolen goods which makes absolutely no freaking sense considering the fact that this is the middle ages and there is nothing whatsoever that shows any sign of an item being stolen so how on earth are they supposed to figure out that it's stolen. Also the crime system is copy/pasted from Elder Scrolls, they weren't even trying, they literally copy/pasted that horrible system. I also hate the fact that there's a hunger meter. What the hell is this? A survival game? Is this freaking minecraft? What? do you want us to take s shit too? Oh of course they do, hence why they have outhouses. Stupid game, don't buy it, it's a buggy mess too.

Best RPG since Baldurs Gate series

I expect alot from my RPG's and this delivers in spades: I was engaged by the story and the world. It had a good start and continued strongly thoughout I loved the characters. Sir Capon was very much a highlight. The quests were engaging - they somehow managed to be fairly unique and interesting throughout! The combat was very rewarding. You could fight a guy for 5 minutes, every second intense and worthwhile. Your progression felt real. I still dont know if it was my skill (behind the keyborad) increasing or my character getting better, but i really felt i went from someone who hadnt held a sword before to a reasonably powerful human - but i still had to run away if 3 or more peasants tried to jump me! Overal a great game. If you are on the fence but like your RPGs - pick it up! I got over 40 hours out of it and enjoyed every moment.
