Impressive point and click adventure followup to the first game. Has all the usual qualities of a p'n'c - interesting story, smart puzzles, various locations, clickable stuff with commentary from the character :) But it goes beyond that with two very interesting full-blown puzzles that the nerd/detective in me really enjoyed. It also brings back cut-scenes - something that LucasArts games had back in the day, but modern indie pixelart p'n'c usually don't do. And last but not least - the art is impressive - parallax, moving trees and grass, reflections - this game is a delight to look at.
This is a very fun point and click adventure game. Like the games of old (mainly Gabriel Knight 1). Interesting plot and nice setting. I believe it is an improvement on the first game with better graphics and equally nice music. I would really love to see and play a third game...
Positives:
I loved the updated animations and character portraits. The cutscenes were spectacular and elevated the game a lot. The feature to stop voice porgression until clicking was extremely useful. The characters/personalities and environments carried the excellence of the first game. I am delighted that it ties back to the first game as it could have easily just been its own seperate case.
Negative:
The first puzzle with newpapers I found to be absolutely abysmal and to start the game with it was pretty dissapointing the only hint you get is to look at the nespapers but that is only really helpful for the first solution and each solution has nothing to do with the last. While I liked the idea of the wider variety of environments it often felt bloated when trying to nail down a specific solution. I found item inspect/use order to way too specific at times where in the same exact coversation the travel brocure does nothing but at the end up the convo it does or interacting with the flower pot too early results in nothing which leads to ruling correct solutions out. Crafting the fake cigarettes hints at peppermint but you are expected to use mint which logically wouldnt make an accurate flavor profile since peppermint is a subspecies (this sounds like an overly specific gripe but this actually lost me a lot of time searching for fing peppermints lol).
Overall:
Not as good as the first game but still a really great point and click!
If you loved the first Kathy Rain game, this is a must. Excellent voice acting, a deep and involved storyline with memorable characters and while most puzzles are straightforward, there were quite a few challenges thrown in as well. Well done, Clifftop Games, I hope Kathy Rain III will grace the GOG soon!
