Welcome to Mega-City One, a city of over four hundred million people and everyone of them a potential criminal. Stretching the length of the 22nd century American eastern seaboard, Mega-City One is the most dangerous city on Earth, for it is calculated that one serious crime takes place every second of every day. So dangerous, it demands a special breed of law enforcer.
Here, there are no police, no trials and no juries, only the Judges. It takes fifteen years to train a Judge for life on the streets of Mega-City One. Fifteen years of iron discipline, rigid self-control and concentrated aggression. Most feared and respected of all Judges is Joe Dredd, a man vested with the power of instant sentencing, a man whose court is the streets and whose word is the Law!
Multiplayer notice: The game's multiplayer servers have been taken offline and the only multiplayer option available is LAN.
Become the most famous and badass law enforcer of the grim future
Pretty much the only reason to buy Judge Dredd: Dredd VS Death is to experience the world. Mega City One is pretty well realised in all its grimy, grotesque, decadent, glory. The gameplay is only just average for an FPS of the era; there isn't much weapon variety and shooting isn't very satisfying. The game isn't very long either, the campaign is the only real draw, and it's 6 hours tops.
As a game of playing as Dredd in his world, it's worth a look. As a pure FPS though, I'd can't recommend it.
Let's be blunt about this: Dredd vs Death is a bad game, where the implementation flaws -- for example, the civilians you have to rescue from zombies repeatedly get stuck behind garbage cans, or being sent into a prison full of vampires with only a pistol and a few rounds where you hope that AI judges die so you can loot their ammo -- are so blatant that you often miss the vast design flaws. The whole concept of taking the decades-long Judge Dredd mythos and turning it into a tedious zombie-killing game, while making the Dark Judges look about as scary as a pack of girl guides is a huge missed opportunity.
Yet, at the same time, it's also rather fun. The first part where you're arresting perps in Mega-City goes to show just what the game could have been like if they hadn't copped out for the sake of making it simple enough to run on consoles, and just seeing some of the Mega-City locations and characters -- even if you're repeatedly shooting zombies with poor AI -- is still an entertaining experience. Beyond that, some of the mini-games are better than the levels in the main game story.
Overall it's hard to recommend to those who aren't Judge Dredd fans, but for $5 it's a cheap few hours of gaming and there probably won't be another Judge Dredd game for some time.
P.S. Why I can't I type space into the review window? It ignores my space bar so I had to type this in another program and cut-and-paste.
An FPS with a great character where you can "judge" the enemies and decide if you arrest them, or just shoot them. Sounds cool, right? Well, prepare to be disappointed. This is a generic game where there's not much motivation to go on: the story is not too interesting, the action is not very exciting, all the stages look the same... It looks and feels like a quickly assembled budget game that hasn't aged well. If you are a Judge Dredd fan you may be interested because familiar characters show up, but if you are just a regular gamer, it's probably a good idea to try the demo before buying a game you may not like at all.
A highly underrated and overlooked game. The graphics may not be the nicest but the gameplay is pure awesome. This game is also pretty much the best and most accurate representation of Judge Dredd in digital media. Whether you're a fan of 2000 A.D. or just some guy with a sudden taste for old school shooters, this game's got you covered!
Solid 10/10. The game is on sale quite often so you shouldn't have much trouble getting ahold of it.
