Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.
Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.
Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

Overall, for me, it's an entertaining game. I like the atmosphere a lot.
Even though I played only the first levels, the level design is nice, with interestingly placed secrets and badies. The character movement is fast. There are nice touches, like small dips in health when the character is electrocuted (either in water through the use of the "electrifryer" or by placing the fingers in the wall power socket, etc). These little touches makes me want to interact more with the environment, just for gags. The pizza in this game is delicious. The ATM throws coins at the push of a button! Beat that!
The behavior of the enemies is predictable, usually rushing toward the player, sometimes getting stuck behind a wall. Playing on "ultra viscera" difficulty level makes me wanna exploit their behavior and electrifry them saving ammo in the process, increasing the fun and difficulty.
The music and sounds are great and useful in locating the enemy, though the music becomes repetitive (especially when spending time interacting with the environment and searching for secrets).
The graphics are part of the atmosphere, integrating nicely. The silly paper thin objects remind me that this is a computer game, to relax, disengage and just have fun, especially after a days hard work in the real life.
Resource wise, the game doesn't need lots of computer resources and it works great on my arch linux system. The game has interesting video mode options like frame rate limiter with offset, FOV. The protagonist can be muted, though I don't know why would anyone want that, I certainly don't.
Gameplay starts out a bit tame. Ammo isn't plentiful enough to go hot and wild with your shooting. Your arsenal is limited and scarce.
Within 2-3 levels you start having ammo to swap between weapons as the situation calls.
By level 5 you can throw explosives at your leisure. And then the fun has begun.
Overkilling enemies make them explode into armor shards. Nothing is more satisfying than sticking the shotgun up their nose and watch the shards fly among the blood. Or blowing up a group with explosives for tasty "bolognese and armor shards". You'll be hunting for those headshots.
The level selection is half great ones that feel lived-in, and half-underground, less interesting ones. The bad ones aren't terrible, just not as exciting as the city and building interiors.
The ending is best experienced by immediately hitting new game, to wash out the bad taste with the good.
