Into the Breach

This a perfectly fine game, and one I do not regret a single cent purchasing but It is a very simple game, the undeniable source of my disappointment. The game relies on unlocks and achievements as a means of giving you more tools with which to create a preferred strategy, a fine system but as executed it discourages you from playing with any custom squad, achievements are tied mostly to completing challenges as a preset squad. Roguelikes thrive on a nigh infinite variability of runs, that is simply not a feature of Into The Breach, it is rare times you are able to draft a new strategy mid-run, either from lack of availability or lack of viability. You will spend most of this game solving the same challenges with the same tools, satifying, well designed challenges, but ones that will inevitably grow tiresome.

The pacing is amazing in this game. Without much explanation you can start playing and you will learn step by step how the game works. Almost all of your questions can be answered by simply hovering above the units or interface symbols. With many classes, different squads, different difficulties, different enemy units, different quests there is also a lot of replayability further down the road. The gameplay reminds me very much of board games like chess. There is very little luck in this game. Often times you will find yourself in a situation where there seems to be no solution. In many cases there is a way to get out of it though. Often times you will need to think outside of the box and use the abilities of your units in an unusual way. This is where the game is at its best. Finding these kinds of crazy solutions while facing a seemingly impossible thread feels damn satisfying!

Very little RNG nonsense in this title. It's more about how well you can play and use the tools available to you. A huge improvement over the slightly unfair gameplay of FTL. Don't hesitate, this one is great fun.

This game is punishing, it's frustrating, its enraging and makes you feel like a total idiot. Once you understand how to use the mechanics, enviroment and knockback to your favor, it becomes addictive. Save the grid by saving the buildings (the bars above) save your pilots (they power up their mechs) use the enviroment and other support to destroy the enemy The game is quite short, but totally worth it . Would 100% buy more maps

There are no frills, just pure tactical goodness. The story is bare-bones, with nice little touches that you can pick up on new playthroughs. You've probably read about the main conceit of this game, but unlike FTL, randomness is at a minimum. You know what the enemy's next move will be, so your goal is to counter it with your (typically limited) forces. The result is that if you fail, it's usually due to a mistake on your part (or maybe a bad map layout). There are so many turns that looked like inevitable defeat, that can be turned around with some clever thinking. Not since Spacechem has a game made me feel so dumb and so smart at the same time! There is a huge variety of squads and abilities, and a fun amount of variation in the maps. The missions themselves are delightfully bite-sized. This is a very easy game to pick-up-and-play. Highly recommend it. Hope Subset Games keeps making games for a long, long time.
