Unbalanced randomness ruins the fun

I'm not a big fan of this kind of games but decided to have a look at it considered the good reviews. When I started playing I fell in love with the mechanics and variety of weapons, fell into the "one more fight" feeling. It's not an easy one, you have to carefully plan every move and use your equipment in the best way. This is a lesson you learn immediately after you face the "Game over" screen unexpectedly early. That's ok. The idea is simple: you have a map where to deploy your squad, few buildings to protect and several enemies trying to destroy them. Buildings are of paramount importance and provide grid energy, when this gets to 0 it's game over. In the beginning, it feels like you are playing some kind of puzzle game that has a perfect solution, and it's really rewarding to finish a fight without losing any building. Later on in the game, you sadly realize that the randomness used to spawn enemies makes some fight unbalanced, without a real solution. It feels really unfair and frustrating to see that you can't do ANYTHING to save one or more buildings. Losing them is a big problem in this game that's why you can't afford such an unevenly balanced system. If your bad luck gets you a couple of unbalanced fights in a row, you are done and have to start over. I'm quite disappointed after all, I finished the game and I had some fun but also got frustrated many times for this reason. It's a pity, it could have been a masterpiece if the developers put more efforts in balancing the fights. I'm not saying it should be easier but there should be at least one possible solution, the kind of "if you really do the right moves you will save the planet" thing.

Chess 2.0 with fun and big robots

A strategy game that may not look like much from the outside, but once you start playing reveals all its qualities. The core gameplay is about preveting monster (the veks) to detroy cities. If they detroy to much you loose. To defend yourself from the veks, like in pacific rim, you will have at your disposal squads of three mech each one with specifics abilities. From one squad to another the gameplay will be totaly different. All the challenge in the game isn't to finish the game but to complete success and acheivement specific to each squads in order to unlock more squads and gameplay style. There are four island plus one final. After completing an island you can spend upgrade for your mechs (only for the mission), but you must be careful because those are expensive and you can rarely upgrade more than one skill at a time. The game is fun, with engaging music and a simple artisitic direction which favors readability. After some difficult start and failures, you are going to understand and uses the mechanics (puns intended) and subtility of the gameplay at your advantage. After winning once, thrilled by the success all you want to do is to restart another game, try new strategy, new squad, new abilities and before you know it you spend 40 hours in the game. I'm not into strategy game nor very good at it, but readability and design is great enough for a newbie like me to play, enjoy, and win with a little bit of perseverance. I recommand it if you like or want to explore turn based strategy game.

A Gem

I never got to like FTL much, though it was definitely a great game. I gave this game a try and it become my favorite turn based strategy game of 2018 and probably of all the last 5 years. Simple graphics but amazing gameplay. Oh, and the music is just so gooood, I love this game.

Excellent strategy game

In my opinion, ITB improves on FTL in every single aspect. They reduced the impact of the RNG, which in itself deserves immense praise. You may play with a plethora of robots, each team needing a different strategy. Five environments (islands) each one needing a different approach. Glorious pixel art. Rogue-like is mitigated by the possibility to use your last upgraded commander (I hate rogue-like a little less than RNG). The atmosphere is well rendered - believable story, excellent sound and music score, clear and useful UI, easily identifiable characters, coherent background descriptions. The map random generator creates nice playfields. Difficulty has also been extremely well balanced. All in all one of the best games I've ever played.
