Unbalanced randomness ruins the fun
I'm not a big fan of this kind of games but decided to have a look at it considered the good reviews. When I started playing I fell in love with the mechanics and variety of weapons, fell into the "one more fight" feeling. It's not an easy one, you have to carefully plan every move and use your equipment in the best way. This is a lesson you learn immediately after you face the "Game over" screen unexpectedly early. That's ok. The idea is simple: you have a map where to deploy your squad, few buildings to protect and several enemies trying to destroy them. Buildings are of paramount importance and provide grid energy, when this gets to 0 it's game over. In the beginning, it feels like you are playing some kind of puzzle game that has a perfect solution, and it's really rewarding to finish a fight without losing any building. Later on in the game, you sadly realize that the randomness used to spawn enemies makes some fight unbalanced, without a real solution. It feels really unfair and frustrating to see that you can't do ANYTHING to save one or more buildings. Losing them is a big problem in this game that's why you can't afford such an unevenly balanced system. If your bad luck gets you a couple of unbalanced fights in a row, you are done and have to start over. I'm quite disappointed after all, I finished the game and I had some fun but also got frustrated many times for this reason. It's a pity, it could have been a masterpiece if the developers put more efforts in balancing the fights. I'm not saying it should be easier but there should be at least one possible solution, the kind of "if you really do the right moves you will save the planet" thing.
