Description
Ultherst was once a peaceful, God-fearing land until the Three Scourges of God came to pass as foretold by Saint Ezekiel, one of the twelve followers of the First Prophet. First came the famine that devasted the populace. Next came the plague that added more unfortunate souls on Death’s abacus. Finally came the great rain of fire, and death fell down on sinner and innocent alike, blood flooding the streets in place of water. The people, in their desperation, turned away from the Holy Mother Church and delved deep into pagan decadence or succumbed to the temptation of the Devil. You have been charged with the office of Inquisitor. It is up to you to investigate crimes against the one true faith and root out heresy--using any and all means necessary. As in all best computer RPGs--the most important choices are yours to make.

Inquisitor is a unique blend of action-oriented combat with a deep and involving tale of betrayal, torture, madness, and infernal damnation. Put your wits to the test as you collect evidence against possible heretics and put them to trial once they have been charged. Use the might of the Inquisition to extract a confession from your subjects, but be warned, use your power wisely or you will face the consequences. If a gritty old-school open-ended isometric RPG is what you looking for, look no further. Inquisitor will provide you with hours of gameplay and a dark, involving story.
  • Three character classes--Paladin, Priest, and Thief--each with his own unique and independent story.
  • Wield the power of the Inquisition as you arrest heretics; use a variety of tools-such as the iron maiden, suspension, and the rack-to extract confessions and burn the heretics!
  • A wide, open-ended world for you to explore and exploit as you see fit.
  • More than 200 weapons, 80 spells, and 7 schools of forbidden and allowed magic!

I would give it a pass

I tried to play this game, but as others have stated the combat is just not fun. So after fighting with it a bit, decided to just play it on the easiest setting for the story line. Which is what I would recommend if you really want to play this game. But this raises another big issue. There is a lot of text in this game, which I have nothing against, I read all the time so not put off by that. The problem is the font and background they picked. First the font is difficult to read, is not adjustable for size, of which it is way way too small, or font face. Secondary the background choice does not provide enough contrast for the font color. This makes the reading of the pages upon pages of text in the game just a tedious endeavor. On a more positive side, the game did run well and I did not encounter any game breaking bugs.

Unfairly maligned in many respects

Let's get a few things out of the way. The combat system in this game isn't as fleshed out as many would like. However, it's nowhere near as bad as Arcanum's real-time mode (which is often compared to). You will need ALOT of potions, and the game can get tedious. But for that I say welcome to the wonderful world of CRPGs. There are certain spells and skills that are just about useless, and others that feel god-like. These type of games have never been about balance, but immersion. And this is a world worth getting lost in. This is a dark, dark game. The atmosphere damn near perfect, and the story, while often written a little off (this is from a Czech developer and is a translation) is worthy of a 300-400 page novel. The team that built this game worked on it for nearly a decade, and while they may not have been able to produce a Blizzard or Black Isle quality combat engine, there aren't many teams that ever did. "Inquisitor" isn't perfect but it's a hell of an effort any way you slice it. It is brutal and old-school, but you wouldn't even be reading this review if that wasn't what you wanted. For $10 or less, it's worth a shot.

What The?

In terms of gameplay, it's pretty much exactly what I expected. Faithful to the old school style mechanics and presentation except for one thing that completely ruined it for me: The dialogue! is absolutely atrocious! It does not fit a medieval world in any way shape or form. If I didn't actually have to wade the through that schlock to play the game, I would give it a higher rating.

This is a fine game

Very refined, artistic, and detailed graphics and animation. Somber, moodful atmosphere. complex, challenging, and rewarding. addictive This game gets the characters right, they are at first inscrutable, the way real people are. I get so tired of the cliche rpg quests and personalities that the other games killed us with. Refreshing.

Basically unplayable.

The translation into English is very poor, which completely destroys the atmosphere the game is trying to create. This would be unfortunate in any game, but in an RPG like this that is depending quite strongly on atmosphere it's almost enough to kill the game by itself. Also, the combat is tedious and clunky, and the first quest you get given is of the "kill 10 bats" variety, only worse, since the game doesn't tell you how many you need to kill. There appears to be no way to interact meaningfully with any NPC until you've completed this nonsensical and tedious quest. I gave up after about half an hour.
