The plot is cool. The puzzles aren't too tough or arbitrary. The mix of stealth, action, and puzzling makes for a pleasant harmony. Really, the only serious problem with this game is the problematic movement controls, as you will discover the first time you try to climb a set of stairs or a ladder.
The story is the game's saving grace. It's not super original or anything, but it's good and has some fun characters. The graphics are pretty dated even for 2000, but it's obvious the game was developed with ps1 in mind. Personally I dig old-school 3d games with prerendered backgrounds, so if that's your thing, you're gonna like them. What makes the game less than stellar, are the controls. They are horrible horrible. Resident Evil 1 feels super smooth in comparison. They are imprecise, your character gets stuck on scenery all the time, turns into random direction whenever he encounters a solid object, when you press the 'use' button he may choose a point of interest at random, even if it's on the other side of the room. The game would've worked way better as a classic point and click adventure, games Revolution was known for. If your looking for good, old-school, stealth gameplay from that era, you'd be better off with Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu on ps1 and Thief on PC.
The game in Revolution's back catalogue I never got to play, and one of the first games I ever bought on GoG. Finally playing it through now in 2018 it's an enjoyable 3D adventure game in the traditional sense. Get past the controls and it runs well and is remarkably playable. For me the key to that came in leaving the tank style controls on, using an XBox joypad and mapping the digital inputs to the keys using XPadder.
Good cold war style espionage thriller, lengthy enough, no difficult or illogical puzzles so your biggest challenge may well be the controls. Graphics are OK especially for the era and it runs just dandy on a modern system. Voice acting is a little flat but passable. All in all well worth the asking price, especially played through to the finale.
Stealthy play appears to be a must, certainly past the first chapter unless I'm missing a possible guns blazing approach. It's far more satisfying played this way as the shooting mechanics are basic and clearly not the way it's supposed to be played. Bonus points for letting you intimidate certain NPCs with your gun instead of just shooting them.
I wouldn't mind if Revolution decided to reviist this property.
The Story is quite good and the game is exciting. However the control are not well implemented. While the NPCs move in a natural fashion, the main character's actions look and feel glitched. The walking the shooting... everything is broken, rendering this game unplayable. A shame, really. I think this game had a lot of potential, but because of the lack of polish I simply cannot recommend it.
Positives:
- Beautiful, rich and cosy artwork.
- Many hours of fun.
- One liners to make you smile.
- Good gameplay mechanic diversity.
- Good amount of game-save slots.
Negatives:
- You will need a guide to avoid aimlessly running around.
-- The environments are confusing to navigate.
--- Low resolution.
--- Highly detailed backgrounds without the ability to interact with everything.
--- Barely any hints, some of the ones present are too obvious.
- Keyboard navigation is terrible.
- Controller support is poor.
- Bugs forcing reload (getting stuck in elevators)
- Strange order of doing things which in combination with the lack of hints and bugs
Personal thoughts:
The game appears to be rushed. Some features seem like they were in the process of being implemented as they're present in some areas, but not others. Like the sparkling to tell you to look in a drawer. But you've been told where the item is by the quartermaster.
On the other hand, for simple things, like a fuse or pulling a lever or intimidating technicians you need to try the 100 possibilities until you find the right one.
