15 years later

Wow, finally beat this game! I remember being 12 and not understanding the mechanics or even how to beat the first mission. (how do they expect little kids to get some of these missions, i had to use the walk through on 3 parts) W.A.S.D. controls, timed missions, and super fast draw speed by the guards make this game hard but worth the story and graphics ^^

I worked on this game!

When I was 15 I went up to York and playtested this game for 8 hrs a day for a week at Revolution. Consequently my memories of this game are of a slightly dodgy experience that came mere months after Metal Gear Solid which was revolutionary. However I remember it had a fair amount of charm and I liked the pre-rendered backgrounds a la Resi Evil. The story was of course decent as that was what Revolution were known for (Beneath a Steel Sky is one of my all time favourite games). Give it a go if you're into the history of games. I ended up being a musician so there ended my foray into the games industry. Oh well...

An evolution for Revolution

When you start playing this game, it's immediately obvious that it's by the same people who made the Broken Sword games - it works in a very similar way, which is by no means a bad thing, as they were excellent adventure games, and In Cold Blood has built on them by adding more action into the mix, with crouching, running, 3D movement, guns and the like, but it still falls into the trap that all adventure games eventually do - they make you think in the same bizzarre way that the developers did. I would never have thought to push the test rig for the particle accellerator out of the way, but the Internet showed me what I had to do, for which I am grateful. It's fun if you have a good walkthrough for when you're feeling stuck.

PSX era at its best

Tldr: Go for it if you like exploring unique gaming endeavors of their era, but only if you can stomach dated controls. "The most ambitious PlayStation game yet", says a praising quote on the back of the Playstaition 2-cd pack cover of In Cold Blood. And yes, it was ambitious in being a creative and original twist on singleplayer story based gaming. The mix of stealth, adventure, and tank-controls resident evil style action - and a quite succesful one - still remains a pretty unique gaming experience; parallels are hard to find up to present day. About the gameplay, I will only say that you have to try it for yourself and see. The controls are really dated and if that's something you can't get past, this game will probably be left in your library unfinished; somewhere around first or second mission. If you can have a little patience, or if you actually remember the gaming experience of Resident Evil 1-3 as "having fun", you'll get used to it. Anyway, you will find out that the game is built around the controls pretty well and doesn't want you to do much beyond their possibilities. As for the story, setting, atmosphere, etc., this is a classic cold war spy thriller, very well executed. While the story and the setting are rather gloomy, revolving around events in a small totalitarian country, the encounters are filled with a lot of humor and the dialogues are really very well written. The mixture of a serious spy novel with a absurd funny situations is not as bizarre as in Metal Gear Solid, the humor is more subtle, but nevertheless funny and sometimes very smart. The atmosphere of a dreary soviet-like country is mixed together with cool scifi stuff makes you want explore every little room, makes you want to progress unraveling the mystery and find out what you can about this particular fictional crisis. The visuals, while dated, do not fail at all to drive this point home. That's mostly thanks to the 2-d prerendered backgrounds which haven't lost it charm.

Solid Espionage Adventure

ICB is hard to put under a specific category. At its core, it plays like an adventure game, though there are also significant combat elements. Overall, the story kept me playing throughout and it is a respectable showing in the rare spy genre.
