Set in a fantastic 1930s world, “Impossible Creatures” is a 3-D, real-time strategy game by Relic Entertainment the creators of Homeworld, Dawn of War and Company of Heroes that pits the player against an evil villain in a desperate campaign across a chain of remote and diverse islands.
Using Earth’s most formidable animals as building blocks, the player must create an army of genetically-altered mutant monsters in a titanic struggle to protect an unsuspecting world.
Thousands of units: “Impossible Creatures” has more than 50 animals that can be combined to create a vast number of mutant creatures, the results of which are limited only by your creativity.
Strategies as boundless as your imagination -- By building these creatures into powerful and effective armies, you can define your strategy and how you'd like to tackle your opponents.
Unprecedented replayability – “Impossible Creatures” offers boundless creature combinations, armies, and strategies as well as online play and an easy-to-use mission editor that provides limitless play options.
Impossible Creatures is an economic RTS where your units are created by combining different animals into horrible looking monstrosities which you then command to victory!!!
Highlights for me:
Cheetah + Eel - Lightning Kitty (Tier II Ranged)
Panther + Lioness - Kitty Kitty (Tier III Melee)
Polarbear + Crocodile - PolarCrock (Tier IV Melee)
Rhino + Eel - Lightning Puker (Tier 5 Ranged)
Everything worked great on my system. The game ran at a smooth framerate, controls are tight and responsive. Most modern RTS hotkeys exist. This game is fun it's only downfall is the god awful story and dialogue It kind of reminds me of a 90s cartoon.
Much fun to be had here by RTS Gamers. :D
This game has a killer feature that others don't: combining creatures, and it's fun! It reminds me of Evolva.
Unfortunately, the rest of the game (story, setting, graphics, sound) is nothing to write home about; it plays like a more bland Dawn of War 1, lacking everything that made DoW 1 great.
In practice, 80% of the creatures are unnecessary; you will probably compare their stats to the killer six or so (e.g. Lobster + Rhino/Elephant, Electric Eel + Rhino/Elephant) and ignore the rest.
But it's worth playing, just for that one innovative idea.
Impossible creatures review
Playing the tutorial , since I was a bit put off by the unfamiliar bizarre appearances of the combined animals, was to keep them recognizable and set The Army Builder to create stock animals. So during the final battle of the tutorial it was stock animals versus the abominations of the enemy.
In Player vs Computer mode noticed no access to the Army Builder, players in this mode use prebuilt armies which are 9 creatures already combined so it goes like this:
—build workers to gather a needed resource and build buildings
—build creatures from the prebuilt army
—Research to unlock higher tier creatures from prebuilt army, improve creatures and workers, unlock buildings
Take army creatures and trash enemy base to win.
Also, the player can PAUSE the game and GIVE ORDERS which execute once unpaused, useful for special abilities of some creatures . a SPEED ADJUST, a slower or faster paced game .
The campaign is potentially more interesting as it allow access to the Army Builder on the active map but one accesses different creatures according to the mission and its constraints.
In skirmish there are far more Maps available especially w/ mods. The player uses pre-built armies or can create their own armies using the Army Builder . Done this way, all animals in the game has are available for combining into yet other creatures. That army of nine can be saved and added to the prebuilt armies to use in the player VS computer / multiplayer modes.
Apparently the allure here is to design varied creature armies and then pit them against each other choosing the “custom armies” function when assembling teams on the maps.
If you ever wanted to know whether or not if a condor supported coyote army can beat skunks and porcupines, yes, you can use the Army Builder and play out such a battle on the maps.
A solid game runs well on my machine which is Windows 8.1 Boot Camp Mac.
5 Stars
When this game came out, I thought it sounded amazing. It's a really great concept! Much of the campaign is fun, if wonky. It's fun to learn how to mix animals efficiently.
Eventually, though, the campaign runs out of steam. Even with a lot of practice, some of the campaign missions are way out of my league, and others say they're almost impossible to beat. Too bad. I hate having to truly work to play a game.
Its the type of game that CAN have depth, and CAN have complexity.
But rarely does as it usually just comes down to who has the bigger team first.
