"Held up surprisingly well"

Like world of warcraft, Impossible creatures opts for a simplistic, artsy graphical approach that lets this old school RTS still feel decent in that department. Although the RTS portion has all of the traditional components (two resources, mine one, auto-mine the other, build up armies, attack/win), it's the ability to create your own units that really sets this game apart from anything else. With excellent free community mods, you receive around 70 creatures to mix and match the parts of. Resulting units change in cost, special abilities, and stats as appropriate - so building a team of 9 of these units that suits your playstyle then testing your composition out on the RTS battlefield is what this one is all about. There's still nothing else like it, so it's easy to recommend if you've been looking for an RTS that dares to do something a bit different. A core group of modders has diligently updated the game over the last 12 years and continues to do so, re-balancing creatures, adding new animal options and abilities, modelling new assets and adding new maps. If you take the plunge, be sure to download the free community patch to get into the multiplayer matches and access everything: http://www.moddb.com/mods/tellurian/

A Blast from the Past

I’ve never done one of these official reviews, so preemptive apologies if this comes off a little stilted. I’m one of the old Impossible Creatures players from when it first came out. The game is an RTS from the early 2000s era; where you combine two creatures together to form an army of 9 combinations total. You have 50 (even more with Insect Invasion) different animals to choose from. You can have land, water, or flying units to balance out your team. The creatures will be ranked 1-5 depending on how powerful you’ve made them. This is determined by the animal parts you chose, some which can give your creature abilities like camouflage, spike throw, or tongue shot. I didn’t play the online multiplayer cause I probably would have gotten curb stomped by way better players. I mainly played against bots or my favorite aspect of the game; the Campaign. The campaign was well done, with a host of diverse and interesting characters (specially the villains, god they were deliciously awesome). Unfortunately it was balls hard, I eventually had to use the cheats to get more coal and electricity to build troops to defend myself, and even then it was hard! Like holy crud did the enemy just keep spewing out tough creatures in waves at me at times. But I found it worth it so I could play through the story more. The games not perfect though, there are some issues. For one, the game came out in 2003 so for many the graphics haven’t aged that well (personally I like it). Also like I mentioned with the campaign, the learning curb might be a bit hard for some people (or maybe it was just me being a lame little kid when I played). I should also mention that there’s a pretty healthy mod scene that has survived over the years and is still going (Tellurian Mod). I can’t recommend this game enough, I really hope it makes a come back here on gog and the community is revitalized. It’s a game with an interesting concept that hasn’t been dipped into a whole lot, and has an awesome campaign.

Incredible RTS

It's a brilliant RTS, designed around futuristic technology being researched during the 1930's. Imagine a world in which you're in control of combing the DNA of animals perfectly. You're able to reproduce the animal kingdom the way you see fit. The way you combine creatures give them powerful attributes, which could be used for good or evil. Keep in mind, this game was created many years ago. It was an original RTS with online gameplay which players enjoyed tremendously. There are two major reasons the original release of this game failed. 1.) The developer and published had a legal dispute over another situation. They never worked with each other again, although Impossible Creatures 2 was in development phase. Due to their falling out, everything about IC was put on hold. It was no longer updated nor maintained. Eventually the online server was taken down. The community had some amazing people in it. Many people worked together to keep the game alive. There are some people who developed amazing mods for the game. The mods balanced out the game, created new content, and kept people playing through Hamachi. 2.) The game had limited advertising on release. They didn’t advertise this game nearly enough. It had thousands of players to begin with, but it slowly died off without people being aware of its existence. If you’re looking for an incredibly fun multiplayer RTS game, with unlimited possibility for strategic gameplay and skill. Look no further. This game will test your mind with rough competition online! Balance: 5 (Fixed with the proper mods) Graphics: 5 Music: 4 Cinematics: 7 Story: 7 Content: 5 Controls: 9 Gameplay: 10 Overall: 6.5

Classic RTS, fresh Mechanics

This game from 2003 runs perfectly at my Win10-64bit computer. No technical issues... The game itself... surprisingly fun! The heart of the game is the creature-designer. The rest plays like Warcraft3 or Command and Conquer. You gather resources, build some buildings and improve your technology. You can build stronger creatures with increasing tech-level. Its easy and "generic" if you will. The good thing is, you will find yourself pretty fast in the action. If you never played something like this game... there is a good tutorial too, which i recommend for the "Creature-Design-Usage" part. The soundtrack goes well and satisfying and you should give it a try at youtube. This game is really child-friendly, which could be good and negative. For me its a bit negative, since it takes a lot of "drama" from the overall design. If this game was a bit more complex or had some depth in story and maybe a bit more details on the maps, it would have received 5 stars. A really good, enjoyable RTS, for a fair amount of money. (There are also some Mods on the Internet, adding new creatures... Just Saying)

Thank You GOG!

I still remember playing this game in my dad's study before having to go to school. And I luckily still have both disks to install the game (something I have found from looking online is very rare). However I do not have a computer that can run my older games. This is an amazing thing that GOG has done, yes because I am biased and have the utmost rose tinted glasses. However, GOG offering a cheap alternative for me to be able to play this game is amazing, Thank you GOG could not be more thankful of all that you do, and DRM free? I already threw my money at the screen but here's some extra *make it rain money*. I can reclaim my all Sperm Whale/animal giant ARMY! I suggest everyone give it a try.
