Description
Explore a beautiful, vast and ruined world riddled with dangers and lost technologies. Echoes of a dark and violent past resonate throughout a savage land, steeped in treasure and blood. Hyper Light Drifter is an action adventure RPG in the vein of the best 16bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.

Drifters of this world are the collectors of forgotten knowledge, lost technologies and broken histories. Our Drifter is haunted by an insatiable illness, traveling further into the lands of Buried Time, hoping to discover a way to quiet the vicious disease.
  • From each character to subtle background elements, everything is lovingly hand-animated.
  • Easy to pick up, difficult to master; enemies are vicious and numerous, hazards will easily crush your frail body, and friendly faces remain rare.
  • Upgrade weapons, learn new skills, discover equipment and traverse a dark, detailed world with branching paths and secrets abound.

Those visuals

Yeah I really hate it when games just use pixelart just because it is cool, this game actually does make use of it. The lower fidelity actually helps in creating a atmosphere of mysterie and terror of what had happened to this world. The gameplay is also pretty decent, it could be smoother and some places but still pretty good. Even trough the Devs are lying to you! Don't use the controller! Keyboard and Mousecontrols are so much more suited for this game. I wouldn't have mentioned it if the devs wouldn't be so arrogent to assume my preferences. But this game looses one star because the implementation is pretty bad! First of all, the gamespeed is bound to the rendertime! Meaning if you don't reach full 60fps (or 30fps if you set it to that) the game will run slower!. This is a big NONO! Never do that!. I also had some grafikal glitches where animals spawn in the air and some audio bugs that made annoying sounds in the menus. But nothing game breaking which is incredible for how unskilled the programmers must have been. Also it runs like ass, this is the kind of game that should run flawlesly on an 1997 win95 machine!. But it has framedrops for seamingly no reason at an top of the line machine of 2017!. I have an i7 6700k and a gtx 1080 ti! Well how do you fix it? You restard the game! So the game is obviously not doing its job of propper runtime optimization. I assume that they coded this thing in C++ and fergot to free some resources after using them. So even so your card does NOTHING! It is getting cluttered with empty tasks!. But as I heard it is only in certain regions. But yeah, buy this game, have fun with this game, it could have been a perfect rating, the rest of the game totally saves the incompentency of the programmers!. And I hope that they will learn out of it because otherwise this is a really good game.

You SHOULD PLAY this game!!

I am a big fun of Zelda like games. I got really interested on this game because of the art style which is awesome. The game is one of the best of its kind and I highly recommend it to players that like Zelda games with the difficulty and atmosphere of Dark Souls games. I found the difficulty highly rewarding with interesting boss fights and obstacles that you don't believe you can surpass in the beginning but get trained to as you make progress. The story is quite cryptic but it is there. I really hope this team will make another game. Some minor issues were some crashes in me Ubuntu system and that the map is not informative at all. I only used it to warp around. Also the game is made to be played with a game pad. I played the game on 30 fps and had no problems on fights at all, so some critics about it are exaggerating. Anyway a MUST HAVE title for people that like beautiful pixel art games with a good challenge.

Feels good, man.

Pros: -Captivating Art. -Unique Aesthetic. -Good Soundtrack -Engaging Combat. -Great Mix of Relaxing & Heart-Pounding. -Difficult but Fair. Cons: -Bad Keyboard & Mouse support. (Best played with a controller.)

Beautiful and Disquieting and Empty

The game screams retro. Old off-key sounds, a map that is more art than function, and all the neon color scheme. The apparent theme is a familiar technology and the corruption of man (or bunny thing) has killed us all, ruining our world and corrupting it for future generations. But, there is a sickly hope: The Hyper Light Drifter. That's you. Exploration and combat are a pleasure aesthetically with minute details and vibrant colors. However, both the combat and the exploration suffer from purposeful retro design. Maps are nigh useless, with the inability to make marks or pin points of interest (or reliably tell where your current location is). If you are trying to find all the hidden secrets of the world you need a mind of purest crystal, or google. This element of the game clearly detracted from the game for me. Luckily the game respects your time with it's overall length, and backtracking isn't very time consuming. The combat is a majority of the game. It has the potential to be very stylish and slick once you get the timings down, but the timings can be punishing and the screen very busy. You will lose yourself sometimes, and need to be ready to start a difficult fight over again. The game shines in it's ability to let you handle fights in different ways. It has just a few basic systems, but they are well polished. Drifting. Swordplay. Guns. Bombs. It's beautiful. Or, it can be. Drifting is going to be your bane until you get it down. Finally, the narrative. Delivered without any text from the cast, the story is largely open for interpretation. Beside my impressions above really this game captures the unease and toxic nature of the world in a way much akin to Nausicaa (of Ghibli fame). I absolutely feel this was intentional. However, unlike its inspiration, the story lacks heart, demanding it from the audience. There is very little to be endeared to. No charm. For that I must knock a star. The atmosphere is crushing. I recommend it to veteran gamers.

A pretty good, but flawed, Zelda-Like

The game ticks most of the right boxes when it comes to being good: good gameplay, a nice world that encourages exploration, nice visuals, a very nice ambient soundtrack, and for the most part, fun. However, even though it's generally well put together, the game may be a bit too cryptic for it's own good. This isn't so much a story problem but a communication one to the player, especially when it comes to collectibles or how certain elements work, and for new players, it may be very easy to get lost on what to do next. Good news is, with a bit of patience, it'll likely click and just become a nitpick Overall, I would recommend having a look, but not before making sure what you're getting into.
