Description
Explore a beautiful, vast and ruined world riddled with dangers and lost technologies. Echoes of a dark and violent past resonate throughout a savage land, steeped in treasure and blood. Hyper Light Drifter is an action adventure RPG in the vein of the best 16bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.

Drifters of this world are the collectors of forgotten knowledge, lost technologies and broken histories. Our Drifter is haunted by an insatiable illness, traveling further into the lands of Buried Time, hoping to discover a way to quiet the vicious disease.
  • From each character to subtle background elements, everything is lovingly hand-animated.
  • Easy to pick up, difficult to master; enemies are vicious and numerous, hazards will easily crush your frail body, and friendly faces remain rare.
  • Upgrade weapons, learn new skills, discover equipment and traverse a dark, detailed world with branching paths and secrets abound.

no... just... no....

This is a game I REALLY wanted to like. From the opening scenes, I wanted to delve into this one. But when the game started to pull cheap bullshit with enemy spawns (especially from within walls I was just at), I began to lose interest. When it refused to give me more story then the cryptic start after 5 hours, I began to question why I was even there. When I found the reason to take a warp upgrade to be pointless as the game refuses to let you use it in the most useful way there is after spending half my currency (which I'm still not sure what that currency is, by the way), I literally stopped caring entirely. The unfortunate reality is this game is not worth the headaches for the hopes that it might reveal just what the fuck is going on.

Awesome

Only about 6 hours into the game and I'm completely hooked. There are so many things that are just perfect that it's hard to know where to start. HLD takes the essence of everything that was good about SNES-era adventure gaming, sprinkles in some Samurai Jack, bits of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, a little Devil May Cry, queues from Journey and before you know it it's tweaking all the right neurons to inspire nostalgia for a golden age of gaming that never actually existed outside this game. The exclusively visual storytelling (not a single word printed or spoken to convey the story), minimalistic tutorials (the rare single line instructions are terse even by Twitter standards), moody atmospheric music (think Blade Runner meets Super Metroid), exploring and backtracking (a la Zelda, Super Metroid), guns, dash, and swordplay combat (right out of DMC, if DMC was a top-down adventure), pattern-based frustrating boss fights (think Ys, but without the ability to go level grind to give you an edge), all combine to make this one of the best games I've played in years. I usually don't do this, but every once in a while I feel the need to address other reviews. The game tells you right up front it was designed to work with a controller, and it works perfectly with a controller. This is supposed to closely resemble a 90' console game so it' pretty much a given that you need a game pad for it. Complaining that the keyboard and mouse controls aren't an optimal way to play Hyper Light Drifter is like complaining that Starcraft II doesn't work very well with your steering wheel controller.

Developers ignoring critical issues

There was a lag in publishing patches for GOG version. Now they ignore quite critical performance issue making it impossible to play without regular game restart. The game itself is nice, but it does not cost these money without fixing the issue, discussed in this thread: https://www.gog.com/forum/hyper_light_drifter/slow_after_aprox_30mins_play

A little big jewel-Una pequeña gran joya

English version, sorry for my english. I write this in Spanish because it is my native language and in English would not even know where to start. So I'll make a kind of summary at various points of what I like and do not like that so I will be easier to translate it to English and also evitare that you have to read a brick. Pros: + Design artistico in impreisonante pixel art. + Tremendously immersive and visual design according to the soundtrack. + Gameplay proof bomas all great answers. + Decent length. I lasted 7 hours but that was not to find all the secrets. + Mode makes New Game +. + No need any language to play. No texts more than a couple of tips and no dialogues in real languages. Everything is told with images and the environment perfectly. Cons: He could use more character jugablmente improvements, especially improvements attacks. -More General difficulty especially in the heads. Just spend a little cost me 2 of them. The rest walk for my taste.

A truly griping world.

A masterpiece of sharp style, an enthralling set of mechanics. And a story masterfully told with a built world. Some of the toughest bosses I've ever faced. And a sound scape and soundtrack that will give you an insurmountable sense of wonder and passion. The gameplay order of things, although basic and perhaps a little predictable, is fleshed out with interesting and unique locations between the different areas you visit. The world is painted with worldless stories that left me in awe, yearning to unlock the secrets underneath the surface. Mobs, combat challenges, and bosses were tough, but fair. The mechanics of the game are centred around quick shooting, dashing, and telegraphing enemies patterns and attacks. Although it can take some time to wrap your brain around how damage is dealt with respect to depth, once you've got it, it will click. The upgrade paths for your various combat repertoire add new layers of depth into the gameplay, making the progression of combat and upgrades a means to keep it fresh throughout. The art is simply stunning. The style, colour palette, the way animation is smooth, but broken up gives nostalgia to a game which rightfully should have none. Its new, but feels old. And that feels great. The story is interesting, primarily because of how a narrative is told. Rather than a character speaking, an action panel style of comics is given. Get this game. Don't give up.
