... is spoiled by bad design decisions.
Game is even "hard", it's just unfair and vile at times.
Play the first, it's the superior version.
I understand why they didn't send test versions to journalists...
The game is ok, I can see the vision but for a casual gamer like me, it's inaccessible. HK was very well balanced in its difficulty, not so here. Too many design decisions that are just annoying more than challenging. Among them:
- Almost everything does two damage. The first health increase feels meaningless because of this.
- Enemies are damage sponges. First weapon increase is 10 hours in and barely feels like it makes a difference
- Healing is significantly more difficult and less effective. It's harder to pull off and requires more damage on enemies, even with crests which make it easier.
- Some of the boss runbacks are atrocious for no reason
- Environmental damage is very frequently two damage, making exploration frustrating especially for those who don't excel with platforming
- World is huge but empty, very poor pacing of items and rewards
- Two currencies, with the main currency not dropping off of everything, feels punitive. Extra much so when basic functionality like resting at benches is locked behind currency.
- Can't get soul back if you die in a boss arena because it's locked in the arena. In HK if you were stuck at a boss, you could walk away from the boss without losing anything or using an item, not so here. Unfair for explorers who may want to come back to a boss later.
I could think of more if pressed, but at the end of the day, the game is difficult via frustration to the point where it's just not fun. A lot of players came from HK and know it was simply a more fun and accessible experience. All of these issues are technical and resolvable, and I hope TC will realize that not everyone who wants to enjoy a game should need to "git gud" to do so.
It's just too hard. I beat Hollow Knight (secret boss too) and lots of other hard games but Silksong is just too hard. You'll need lightning reflexes, excellent memory and the willingness to die again and again and again and again.. I got the normal ending in Silksong and was working on the secret extra ending but sorry.. just not having a good time.
