Description
He who controls the swill controls the universe. It really is that simple.

An untapped supply of swill has just been discovered on the uninhabited archipelago of Saustralasia deep in the South Pigsific Ocean, and every Hog Nation wants the land as its own. Gone are the days of scratching around for drips of swill. Saustralasia’s 25 regions are drenched in the stuff, and the only way to ensure that no one else gets their filthy trotters on the delicious swill is WAR!

Your task will not be an easy one. To successfully conquer and exploit Saustralasia you will need to seek and destroy the enemy across each and every one of the archipelago’s six islands, from Hogshead all the way down to Arstria. Our resources are limited, you have to maintain a rather small army, but with every victory on the field of battle, your swine will learn more skills and acquire the use of a wider range of weaponry.

There will be slaughter and butchery. Your job will be to bring victory to your chosen nation, to save your own bacon and make a meal of your enemies. With victory comes great reward. So great in fact that your brave boars will be as happy as pigs in… well, you get the idea.
  • Explosive 25 level single player campaign and an addictive online multiplayer mode for up to four players.
  • Arm your hogs to the teeth with a choice of 40 different weapons including sniper rifles, bazookas, mines, jetpacks, cluster grenades, and tanks.
  • Fight for one of six different pig armies, each one based on a real nation from the First World War-era: Great Britain, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, or the USA.
  • Customize your squad as you promote your hogs from Grunt to Officer in one of four different classes - Heavy Weapons, Medic, Espionage, or Engineer.
  • Cheeky sense of humour brought to life by the vocal talents of renowned British comedian Rik Mayall.

BE WARNED

This game is NOT the same as the PS1 version. First the music is a little buggy with the wrong cues and some tracks missing when compared to the playstation, but this is a minor thing and doesn't make that much difference. Most importantly however, THE AI PIGS DON'T MOVE! If you were expecting the tense strategic battles from the PS prepare to be disappointed. The enemy are no more than turrets which sit there and attempt to shoot at you. This is not a bug it was coded like that, which is strange considering it came out after the PS. I am a massive HoW fan but i will just have to dust off my old machine if i want the real experience. A shame really. On the bright side it does have hot-seat multiplayer which works like a charm and is always fun to play (just not with AI). I have still not had time to test the online yet to see if i could get that working, looks like you would need hamachi but i cannot say if it works.

It was almost awesome

Great game from my childhood sadly spoiled a little bit here. First I will start with the positives: - Runs smooth as silk, no drops in the frame rate - Controller support as standard (needs a bit of tweaking in the options) - Great hotseat multiplayer, Still need to try the online - The voice over in the tutorial and the pigs sayings are as funny as they always have been. Now I have to come onto the negatives of which there are a few: - AI pigs don't move (I played the PS1 version as a kid) - Music is completely random, I was playing as Tommy's Trotters and getting the Sushi Swine music playing over my turns. - Music doesn't stop when you take control of your pig - Ambient battle music is absent. - And lastly the music is overly loud with no slider to turn in down. Overall its a good game to get and play a bit of hotseat multiplayer with friends for old times sake but it has been a disappointment in many ways.

An underrated little gem from the past

Lighthearted, charming, and simply fun. We used to play this game so much back in the day. Hogs of War is certainly not an epitome of turnbased strategy or even solid design, but there's an undisputable charm all over the place that forgives a lot of it's faults, from the single player campaign narrative to the voice acting. The game is not particularly challenging by design, but there is still some basic tactical thinking involved with choosing the right promotions, positioning, choice of target, and getting the firing angles right, and using your given time right. The clunky controls and the sometimes almost offensive timer can make a spot on hit in a tight situation feel very delicious. And even if not hard, there can be some teethgrinding over (in a fun way) a simple mistake like shooting your bazooka way over the target and then watching the computer enemy dynamite two of your pigs, or walking too close to a ledge, falling in water and drowning. The campaign builds up the challenges well for what it tries to achieve and the promotion system spices up the gameplay nicely. The most fun is to be had when trying out a no casualties run of the campaign, which is the real meat of the game, alone or with a friend taking turns with the pigs. Surprisingly (or not) the hotseat matches are the weakest part or the game and can get very old very quickly. Certainly not a "serious business" game for high grade strategists out there. And if you can approach it that way and are a fan of these little "arcade" type TB games, this should be just the game for you to pick up.

Born to Grill!

This game was flawed yet I still had lots of fun with it and I think it deserves to be played as much as Worms. First of all this must be the first "Worms in 3D" out there, but it is original and innovative enough not to be a shameless Worms clone. The pigs have lots of charm, just like Worms. It is fun, just like Worms. It is not easy to master, meaning you will often lose to AI, just like Worms. You can play in hot-seat mode against a friend, just like Worms. You should play it, just like Worms.

A turned based gem

This game was a large part of my childhood, released in the early 00's for the PS1, Hogs combines turn based strategy with third person action, much in the same vein as the Worms series. However what makes this game stand out is it's excellent single player campaign and sense of humor. The multiplayer commentator is also voiced by the late great Rik Mayall who comments sarcastically on your failures and achievements on the battlefield. For the price they are asking it's a bargain, whether your looking for some nostalgia or just a solid strategy game you can't go wrong.
