Enjoyable, but shows its age

Firstly, the rating is relative to its 2000's peers; it's a little unfair to penalize a game for 20 years of existence Campaign story is serviceable; undead apocalypse happening with our protagonist being an arrogant Elvish hero. Manually save at the start of every mission. Picking from the campaign menu sets ya to Level 1 with no spells, which is painful. Graphics use 3d models for heroes and buildings and 2d sprites for smaller units, this is most noticeable for the undead faction but lets the game display an absolute horde with minimal impact on performance. The graphics themselves are solid; units are visually distinct, even when clumped up. Gameplay has hero and base-building aspects. The hero aspect revolves around small stat buffs on leveling that add up, equipping a bunch of gear ya find on the map, and collecting "cards" that let em cast spells. The game has stats available for increasing and decreasing the effect of spells, but plenty of spells are incredibly powerful without any investment. The RTS portion includes a few modern amenities while missing some other important ones. Resources are gathered from resource nodes, which are infinite, while being throttled by how many workers can harvest from a node. Production buildings have an option to auto-build units, which lets ya focus more on your hero and armies. At the same time, there isnt an 'idle worker' button, nor a select military button, which makes it easy to lose track of your units and have wasted supply standing in a corner somewhere Pathfinding leaves a bit to be desired; sometimes units will get stuck until you tell them how to go around a rock Performance is where this game gets a ding. While the use of 2d sprites allows more units to fit in the game, there is a fundamental issue where the undead factions will produce unlimited units to cram into a space about the size of a shed, which then will cause the game to crash when ya try to save. Turn off autosaves to mitigate this.

Fun RTS!!!

its similar to your warcraft 3's/Starcraft 2's with Heroes being apart of your army. With that being said there is still a lot of classic RTS army building going on in this game. I realy enjoyed the campaign. Unfortunately there is only one campaign and you are playing as the Elves. I would give it a shot if you like High fantasy and RTS games.

Considering how new this game is...

it should be better. As others have said, there are some great ideas here. The different races are fun to play, lots of unique units. The shear volume of soldiers on the field at once is impressive. I haven't played any multiplayer, but the single player skirmish mode is no fun. Once the computer finds you, it just sends wave after wave of enemies after you. Your only real "strategy" is to set some units on infinite build, and hope you can level up on some tech trees before you get over-whelmed by the enemy. Or, have a computer player on your team to distract the enemy so you can build more. I wish there were more game settings, so you could alter enemy behavior, just adjust various game settings, or maybe change how long it takes your hero to revive post-rally, etc. It's hard not to compare it to AoE, and even the first version or two of that game is better than this. I'm glad that I bought it on sale, because I probably won't play it again. There are better games out there.

For fast clickers only

This is a strange game: in some scenarios it plays like a RPG (and I found it enjoyable); in others it becomes a parody of a RTS (and I found it totally unplayable). Its concept of strategy seems to consist in repeatedly and predictably throwing big masses of enemies at the player. I don't know if there is some timing problem involved, but on my PC it abruptly becomes unmanageable after about ten scenarios. Too bad because the graphics is good and the programming is solid. I could only recommend it to masochists.
