Enjoyable, but shows its age
Firstly, the rating is relative to its 2000's peers; it's a little unfair to penalize a game for 20 years of existence Campaign story is serviceable; undead apocalypse happening with our protagonist being an arrogant Elvish hero. Manually save at the start of every mission. Picking from the campaign menu sets ya to Level 1 with no spells, which is painful. Graphics use 3d models for heroes and buildings and 2d sprites for smaller units, this is most noticeable for the undead faction but lets the game display an absolute horde with minimal impact on performance. The graphics themselves are solid; units are visually distinct, even when clumped up. Gameplay has hero and base-building aspects. The hero aspect revolves around small stat buffs on leveling that add up, equipping a bunch of gear ya find on the map, and collecting "cards" that let em cast spells. The game has stats available for increasing and decreasing the effect of spells, but plenty of spells are incredibly powerful without any investment. The RTS portion includes a few modern amenities while missing some other important ones. Resources are gathered from resource nodes, which are infinite, while being throttled by how many workers can harvest from a node. Production buildings have an option to auto-build units, which lets ya focus more on your hero and armies. At the same time, there isnt an 'idle worker' button, nor a select military button, which makes it easy to lose track of your units and have wasted supply standing in a corner somewhere Pathfinding leaves a bit to be desired; sometimes units will get stuck until you tell them how to go around a rock Performance is where this game gets a ding. While the use of 2d sprites allows more units to fit in the game, there is a fundamental issue where the undead factions will produce unlimited units to cram into a space about the size of a shed, which then will cause the game to crash when ya try to save. Turn off autosaves to mitigate this.
