Huge Success, Failure

Hand of Fate 2 is finally here and it's an improvement. That said, prepare to be frustrated. The original Hand of Fate was amazing, but it did have 2 especially egregious issues. HoF's equipment deck was poorly balanced. There were a small handful of weapons that were almost instant wins if you drew them, a slew of weapons that were less-than-great but usable, and a couple dozen weapons that were literally worse than no weapon. HoF2 fixes this problem entirely. Almost every weapon is useful. Also, HoF had a few enemies (eg. Minotaur and King of Plague) with atrocious hurtboxes. This problem seems to have gotten way worse in HoF2. Silencers stab their tiny blades straight forward but seem to have a hurtbox that extends 60-or-so degrees in either direction of their attack and ogres have clubs with hurtboxes seemingly 1.5x to 2x as long their models. While these are some top offenders, plenty of other enemies can "hit you" without hitting you, and I find myself leaving this game frustrated more often than the first one. And this sucks because many of these cases would be relatively easy to fix without upsetting the game's balance (animate the silencers doing a slight pincer or reverse-pincer motion instead of a straight stab, scale up the club's model, ...) In addition to this improvement and lack thereof, HoF2 brings a more rich story and more varied scenarios, more variety in its minigames, and a more deep combat system. I heartily recommend it, but keep a stress ball handy for those moments when you get killed by "f***ing nothing".

New + Improved

Whilst I enjoyed the first release I found some areas lacking. In this release you have an inventory giving better purpose to weapons and armor. I like that you can choose to be male or female and have the option in the game to customize your character. You can reassign controller buttons.. always useful. I'm still only a short way in and finding it more engaging. If you have played the first one you won't be disappointed second time round.

An Original and Delightful Experience

Hands of Fate 2 (HoF2) is a great break from the monotony of generic titles that are released so often. I had seen a trailer for the original Hands of Fate awhile back, but missed the opportunity to play it. Now that the sequel is here, I took the plunge and am very pleased with how the game plays. It is advisable to understand that this isn't a Dungeons and Dragons card game nor is it a fighting game - it's both. In fact, it is a fusion of a board game (think 'Talisman'), a card game (Dungeons and Dragons), and a RPG adventure fighting game (any beat 'em up-style game). I was amazed that an original game could be released that actually contained various elements that I wanted in a piece of interactive entertainment. I actually dislike card video games, but HoF2 merges card playing, board games, and adventure fighting games in to a solid game. Pros: + Decent visuals; + Soothing soundtrack; + Great challenge in both the card side and the fighting side; + Good voice acting; + Different ways to play and new plathroughs may vary; and + Fluid combat. Cons: - No co-operative play or multiplayer; - Missing Mini games or other modes outside of the main story/quest mode. Some people may find the game decent, while others may feel that it's underwhelming; however, I feel that it blends several styles of games perfectly - something other developers fail to achieve, or even attempt. The game is a breath of fresh air, and I am really enjoying it. I recommend it if you have the coin. Cheers!

Say bye to your weekend.

I have never played a game quite like this. It is an adventure, rogue-like, deck building, rpg, dungeon crawler, with a splash of action arcade style fighting. Go buy it. Thank me or hate me when you say, "Fuck it! This is what i am doing this weekend."

Could be worse? :D

While there are improvements in HoF2, there are also frustrations with it. First, Combat. I liked the idea of picking a card for what sort of difficulty you want in the game. It gives the players more control over their deck. That is gone. The mechanics of combat is more of the same from the first. Now, the two most frustrating thing about this game is card choice and the dice. I hate the dice rolls. They're not necessary. That's what a success or failure card was for. To continue, getting used to the card pick is impossible because you get three shuffles right off the bat at top speed. Enjoy that, hope you get the guardian angel blessing ;). The introduction of the camp was a nice idea. It gives you a chance to heal. Visit the shop and change appearance. The only thing I dislike about it is the availability of trade goods. It was exciting to find a shop when you had no food and AS FAR AS I KNOW, there are not shop cards. I'm going to try and finish this game. This is my first impressions. They are acceptable but I'm not blown away. So far I prefer the first.
