A worthwhile AA RPG

If you've played a game by Spiders before, Greedfall will feel familiar. It's not AAA, it's not highly polished, and there is jank. Here's my *opinion*... Negatives: - a lot of back-tracking and many early missions are simply fetch-quests with nothing of note. If you have little patience, this might annoy you. - the lip sync and mouth / tongue animations are considerably worse than the other graphic elements. Seems a minor complaint, but can be a distraction. - although it has its own style overall, the game doesn't do anything really different in the genre. - the world and regions are visually pleasing, but there isn't enough variety and their aren't many interesting central focal points to distinguish each map. - I had difficulty trying to pursue the romance option, but that might be down to me! Positives: - the main story is interesting and fairly complex. As you get further into the game, the decisions you have to make are sometimes genuinely difficult and can be thought-provoking. Spiders don't shy away from challenging issues here. - the voice acting [English] of the main characters is of a very high standard, IMO. The dialogue is reasonably well written, but even when the lines are clunky, the actors handle them well. A step up from past Spiders games. - the world looks good. It reminded me in the port areas of Sherlock Holmes Chapter One. - the bottom line for me is I got 57+ hours out of the game. During that time I was very rarely bored or confused and I wanted to keep playing. I'll probably play it again one day, maybe before Greedfall 2. Hope this helps.

Good old new RPG

I loved this. Choices matter, you can't use that weapon without the skills/attributes, very few filler side quests, island looks great, story is serviceable. Skills/progression etc. are all simple but functional. Companions aren't works of epic poetry but all their quests range from OK to enjoyable. Nothing is ground-breaking but it all 'just works'. The crew at Bethesda should play this game before they fill their next game with unnecessary content. If that all sounds underwhelming or just average, in my opinion the whole is more than the sum of the parts. Playing it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish and that's all that matters Cons: Some animations are a little ropy, cutscenes remind me of the Zappa song I came from Nowhere, "they like going around with their teeth showing all the time". DO NOT use ultra textures if you have 6GB or less VRAM, my 1660 Super stuttered like hell until I turned them down to high. Had one main quest specific item not spawn but leaving the cave and re-entering fixed it.

Backtrackfall: Cliché Logs

Having previously liked Mars War Logs and Technomancer, I had high expectations towards Greedfall. However, it's the worst Spiders' game up to date. After finishing the main story and almost dropping the game altogether a couple of times, I'm struggling to name any positives. It's definitely the best looking from the three, from a technical perspective, I guess. The foliage is nice. The game is painful to play regarding all its aspects, because its core design is misfit to the scale. Greedfall is almost 1:1 a carbon copy of Mars: Wars Logs. However, it's padded to a couple of dozen hours of artificial busy work and holding a "Run" key back and forth, and it's not enough to uhold the whole thing. The entirety of content (enemy archetypes, loot, crafting, quest variations) is exhausted in the first 2, 3 hours of the main story. It's just the prologue and a short bit of the main island. If you had played War Logs or Technomancer, you will immediately recognize reskinned enemies in Greedfall: they even share the exact (or almost exact) reactions. Bosses (except the last one) share the same move set. Open world isn't integrated with the quests at all. It's just a background for the player to run from point A and B (sometimes a couple of times in the same quest). There's no real gameplay to talk about besides running back and forth through copy pasted locations and encounters. You will quickly be steamrolling through them. Exploration is not rewarded and itemization is unbalanced. The story and the setting are one of the worst examples of the noble savage cliché I've ever seen. If you had experiences with it before at least once, you know what will happen in the main story and during every side quest. It's all one dimensional. The writing is subpar and you quickly end up skipping it. There's a lot of it, but most is unsubstantial and repetitive to the point of pure annoyance (especially in investigation quests). VO is bad.

still unfinished

The good: The story and quest writing is good. No "bring 10 rat tails to the merchant" quests; the quests tell not only stories, but they add to a whole, bringing the world to life, a bit at least. I really want to underline this: the quests are good. Not stunningly good, but unusually good. The bad: Movement is somewhat clunky, and that makes combat harder without adding anything in return. But what's really bad: the world is left in unfinished-design-mode. If there is an item that can be moved or frobbed at all, it is for you, the player. Even the debris is glued in place, no explosion can move the leaves; if there is a path, it is because it was explicitly put there. If the way is wide enough, the threshold just a thumb high, but the designers didn't plan you to go there: you can't. There is no exploring outside the prescribed path, no useless cruft in people's drawers; there's the same crowd in the streets in back streets at night which walks the good places in sunshine... this is all just a scene set for the character, not a "world". And that clashes with the writing, which does a good job to paint the picture of a complex social, political, even economical situation with many parties involved. Honestly, most shooters from the 1990s have a "world" equal or better to this - let alone anything that was published this millennium. Will they ever get around to fix this? I doubt it. The ugly: Animations with the start-of-movement-jerk, overmuch reuse of assets (especially the houses), and THOSE TEETH. Yikes. Everybody, from the highest noble to the street-gutter misers, has shiny perfect teeth which are unnaturally far to the front, almost sticking out. Remember the "Alien" movies, the two sets of teeth? When they start to talk, it's as if the teeth are about to snap forward any moment. Seems intentional, since it won't be hard to fix. Summary: a good read, but tedious gameplay.
