While little rough on some edges, glitche on some others and lacking a little on spells and armors (I'm kind of demending on that, I really like different Armors) , this game has a charm to it. The setting for a fantasy rpg is quite unique actually, Colonial 17th century.
Quite enjoyable, nicely narrated, voice acted and beautiful, I can only recommend it.
Not a bad game at all. A refreshing story and setting, not as straightforward as a lot of other similar games. In the beginning it is really fun exploring the world, combat system and story. But to the end it becomes very repetitive (same buildings, same spawning's, same insides, same combats) and although I really want to find all the small corners in a world as RPG fan, I just wanted to rush to the end of the story because I was bored out!
In the end really not a bad game, but nothing more then that. There was really more potential in it!
There's a few good points about Greedfall and it's a pretty big accomplishment coming from a small studio, but it definitely needed more attention to detail in areas.
Pros:
+ Interesting story and concept
+ Interesting setting
+ Varied level-up system
+ Varied characters
+ Decent graphics
+ Great sound and music
+ Fully voice acted
+ No major bugs that I encountered. Just a few small clipping issues and animation glitches.
So what went wrong? Well, the biggest problem is that the level design is all kinds of bad. First off, it's not really open world. It's a collection of individual maps that you access via a travel system, each map being a system of pathways that you're forced to stay on. Secondly, there's nothing on the map to reward exploration. Multiple times I ventured around the map to find some secluded corner only to discover that there was nothing there. Or if there was, it was the same old generic loot that you find everywhere. Speaking of loot, weapons need re-balancing. Special, unique weapons are usually less powerful than an upgraded ordinary weapon, which make acquiring them anti-climactic. Mission design leaves a lot to be desired as well. Missions involve you running across multiple maps to talk to someone who tells you where to run to next. There's no variety. The missions also have weird trigger points that don't allow you to deviate from the planned sequence; like not allowing a door to open until after you've spoken to a specific NPC. And speaking of running around, I spent 52 hours beating this game and I swear that at least 20 of those were running from one point to another, and that's after making liberal use of fast travel points. Combat is fine, but uninspired progressing towards boring.
The overall story is good and the characters are interesting, but it's still hard to recommend. It does less wrong than right, but what's wrong, namely level and mission design, is very wrong. It makes the game unnecessarily long.
What you'll get from Greedfall is the kind of RPG you'd come to expect from the 360 and PS3 era and for me that's fantastic. I can't get enough of those types of games and they seem to be less common these days sadly.
The setting is quite unique and the graphics are very serviceable even in 2023 after playing some jaw dropping games like Witcher 3 next gen and Horizon Forbidden West. It's actually really refreshing to play a game that doesn't run like ass after the recent spate of bad PC ports. The game actually seems to utilize most of the cores of my 5900x and will likely run buttery smooth on even fairly modest hardware.
The quests probably aren't up there with some of the dizzy hights of the 'bloody Barron' from Witcher 3 but they're enjoyable enough and I found myself being whisked along by the narrative and my companions affable banter. You'll definitely find plenty to like here though if you enjoy mid life bioware style RPGs and want something in between big releases this year.
The combat is surprisingly fun to engage with and loosing off a quick firearm shot between attacks has a nice meaty impact to it that never gets old. Your characters are nice and mobile too and the combat feels very snappy.
There's a crafting system too which does the job if being a bit rudimentary.
I'd recommend the game even at full price, it might lack some of the polish and refinement of some of the classics of the genre but it punches above its weight and is a very entertaining experience...some ropey accents aside especially from the island natives.
Nice alternative historical piece. The visuals are evocative. The costumes are fun. I got 69 hours and 40 minutes of play, doing almost all the sidequests I found and finishing the game. Quite a bargain. I played on Easy mode because I'm a thinking man rather than a twitch-reflex gamer. I appreciated the Pause button for the same reason. The stories were interesting, and I grew to care about the characters and the world.
Downsides? There are usually some. Mechanically there were a few inconveniences, but nothing to cause a rage-quit. I think I died less than a dozen times, and there were no consequences to tick me off. There were a couple of combats that I thought were just too difficult, even on Easy level. Choices seemed to make some difference, but you didn't always have enough freedom of choice. And finally, the developers had their own philosophy to the story and you can't get around it. Again, not enough to prevent me finishing and having an overall enjoyable time.
Oh, one last thing. The native accent was almost too bizarre to take...
