November 2008. NATO intelligence services report that, for unknown reasons, the Russian military has destroyed Gorky 17, one of the old Soviet Secret Cities. A year later NATO takes over a former Russian secret base built on Polish soil. Diggers discover a laboratory complex in the completely demolished town. After examining the wreckage, NATO decides to leave the lab as it is. But shortly afterwards the town's previously deserted streets are suddenly teeming with hordes of grotesquely deformed creatures. Word soon gets out to the media, making it impossible for NATO to simply destroy the site. So troops are ordered to hermetically seal the area. Nobody is allowed in or out. Will they discover the terrible secret of Gorky 17? And more important - will they live to tell about it?
Be prepared for intrigue, betrayal and even some romance. You will need clever fighting tactics and some brainpower for solving puzzles. Moreover you can search offices, shoot locks and communicate with other characters.

Why buy on GOG.COM?

I played the game many years ago and downloaded it over gog to re-play this treasure. First I was afraid as I heard it will not work with Windows 7. Iam using Windows 7 64 Bit Professional. Installation went without problems. Started the game as ADMINISTRATOR in COMPATIBILITY MODE (Windows 98 / ME) with SOFTWARE RENDERER (!yes, hardware renderer aka graphics card did not work!). I can play the game without problems (except some sound bugs which aren't a big problem). Thx topware&gog for the classic :-)
Very cool and unique mostly linear survival horror game with turn based tactics combat and very light RPG elements. Combination of interesting setting and limited resources adds to a great sense of tense atmosphere.
Only got this working in 640x480 with software rendering.
Although this game is a great specimen of Polish sci-fi, you should carefully think if you want to buy it.
First, you may find yourself fiddling with graphics options a lot just to launch it (especially true for
Direct 3D mode). If you don't really want to play this 640x480 game on you FullHD display, you would also want to run it with DxWnd, which is another bit of a hassle. Then, you may potentially encounter at least one plot-stopper bug that was not addressed in years (there is a solution for it in the GOG forums though). If you are afraid of 3d models with poly count of around 2,000, it is also not a good game for you :D. These, however, are the only things that may stop you from playing.
If you really expect it to be an robust RPG with just a couple of whistles – don't. It's rather a sequence of turn-based battles that are connected with exploration and plot dialogue moments and sprinkled with a little bit of character progression and stats.
On the positive side, the game is really atmospheric, and conveys the feel of sci-fi horror films circa 1999 really well. Go watch John Bruno's Virus before or after you play to get 90 more minutes of Gorky 17 ;).
