Description
November 2008. NATO intelligence services report that, for unknown reasons, the Russian military has destroyed Gorky 17, one of the old Soviet Secret Cities. A year later NATO takes over a former Russian secret base built on Polish soil. Diggers discover a laboratory complex in the completely demolished town. After examining the wreckage, NATO decides to leave the lab as it is. But shortly afterwards the town's previously deserted streets are suddenly teeming with hordes of grotesquely deformed creatures. Word soon gets out to the media, making it impossible for NATO to simply destroy the site. So troops are ordered to hermetically seal the area. Nobody is allowed in or out. Will they discover the terrible secret of Gorky 17? And more important - will they live to tell about it?

Be prepared for intrigue, betrayal and even some romance. You will need clever fighting tactics and some brainpower for solving puzzles. Moreover you can search offices, shoot locks and communicate with other characters.

Brilliant PC Game - Lots of fun

NATO sends a group of elite soldiers to see what happens in a small city in Poland. There are rumors that the city is going the same way than Gorky 17, a secret Russian city that was destroyed. Another commando has disappeared without a clue. Now is our turn to discover what is happening. Our 3 main guys are very nice characters. The leader, Sullivan, has the leadership and takes the command in worst situations. Ovitz, a polish Green Beret, is the translator and first he doesn’t like Sullivan, but he will change his mind. Trantigne, is the youngest and inexperienced character, but he will learn quick under Sullivan’s command. As soon as you get in the city and start to explore, you’ll get in combat. Combat is like a chess game where every character, every weapon and every enemy has its own range, and you’ll learn how much tactical turns the game in here. There is always a quick and easy way to solve the combats, but, you’ll spend some time to find it. There are LOTS of battles in the game, LOTS of enemies, and SMALL amount of ammunition. This is where the survival component takes place. You have to train your group to close combat situations too unless you want to get out of ammo. Don’t take too damage as food and healing items are also limited. Characters also level up abilities. The exploring component is great, with few easy to solve puzzles, and good hidden items, like a character in Museum’s roof. About graphics, the game aged quite well. Backgrounds look amazing, and the 3D characters and enemies still quite nice. About performance, I play in a 12” Notebook with an Atom, 1 GB RAM and an Intel card. No bugs or issues or crashes. Perfect. Weapon sounds could be better but voices and acting are amazingly well performed and the music is a good OST in general, putting some tension on you. This game is a perfect combo of a survival adventure with very tactical combats and some RPG features, with an interesting main story, good graphics and good music. 10/10

Resident Evil and FF Tactics had a Baby

Gorky 17 has 1990s genre mashup written all over it - in a good way. What would you get if the aesthetic and atmosphere of the PS1 era Resident Evil games were merged with the combat of the PS1 era Final Fantasy Tactics games? Well, we can start with the polygonal character models over the rendered environments similar to RE1-3. Then, we have the very creepy B movie horror vibe of RE1-3. Then, it's on to the environmental puzzles we'd normally find in RE1-3. Now, do something very different in the survival horror genre by using the turn-based, grid like, tactical combat found in the Final Fantasy Tactics series. Gorky 17 is practically the offspring of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy Tactics. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Good game but WinXP only

This game presently does not work properly on Vista and Win7, this is a known issue so if you dont have a PC with WinXP, dont bother with this title. On WinXP it works fine though (have to disable hardware zooming). I think this "minor" detail is important and it was omitted from most reviews. The game itself is not bad, the graphics are pleasing and the story is good. The game sucked me in from the start, which is rare. The fights are very similar to console strategy games like Vandal Hearts, which is unusual for a PC RPG. Moving around is very confusing, because you dont know where you can or can not go, the environment layout is horribly done but it was not gamebreaking for me. On the bright side the environments look good and the atmosphere is all there. At certain points (which are not marked but they are not random either), you will encounter mobs or events, so the game loads the fighting instance. These strategic fights are by far the highlight of the game. They are very challenging from the start, and will require the player to actually think and find different strategies for winning, because the enemy AI is very well done. Unless you block their path, the enemies will attack your weakest char, or the one with the lowest HP, even when they have other targets closer to them. Then they are very good at hit and run tactics, but of course you can do the same, or block their path. Another interesting aspect of these fights is how sometimes mobs can join during a fight: at the begining of the fight there are 2-3 enemies on the map, then mid-fight another tough mob can join out of nowhere, adding an element of surprise to an already tough fight. If you have a PC with WinXP, Gorky 17 is definitely worth a look.
