You arrive home after a year abroad. You expect your family to greet you, but the house is empty. Something's not right. Where is everyone? And what's happened here? Unravel the mystery for yourself in Gone Home, a story exploration game from The Fullbright Company.

Gone Home is an interactive exploration simulator. Interrogate every detail of a seemingly normal house to discover the story of the people who live there. Open any drawer and door. Pick up objects and examine them to discover clues. Uncover the events of one family's lives by investigating what they've left behind.

Go Home Again.
  • A Personal Story: created by veterans of the BioShock series and the writer behind Minerva's Den, Gone Home offers the rich, nuanced details of one family's struggles to deal with uncertainty, heartache, and change.
  • An Immersive Place: return to the 1990s by visiting a home where every detail has been carefully recreated, and the sounds of a rainstorm outside wrap you in the experience.
  • No Combat, No Puzzles: Gone Home is a nonviolent and puzzle-free experience, inviting you to play at your own pace without getting attacked, stuck, or frustrated. This house wants you to explore it.
  • Fully Interactive Investigation: discover what's happened to the Greenbriars by examining a house full of the family's personal possessions, and the notes and letters they've left behind. Use your powers of observation to piece together a story that unfolds as you explore.

Not a game

I do not really understand why this product is associated with the category "adventure games". There is no real puzzle to solve, one only wanders in an empty house while a story unfolds, triggered by minimal interaction with the environment (to be fair, you also have to find out two combinations, but that's all for the puzzle department). All the touches which might seem to allude to something dark and dangerous (the empty house at night, the hidden passages, the occult symbols, the references to the crazy relative) resolve to nothing. At the end, you realize you could have achieved the same experience by tiding up your own apartment/house for two hours with an audio book in the background. I understand that there are people who appreciate a product like that, but do not call or present it as a game, this is simply misleading.

Not really a video game

More like a light switch flipping and audio log listening simulator.

Alluringly Mundane

I started this out just enjoying the exploration of the house, but the story just dragged me in. Saying much of anything about it is heavy spoiler territory, but the way progression and exploration unfolds is pretty neat. There are a few plot threads that kinda don't go anywhere, and it is all over the place at times, but the main story is pretty strong. Full disclosure, though: this one hit pretty close to home; your mileage may vary.

Gone Home and it's problems

In Gone Home, you search an empty house and look for clues as to why is it empty. The visuals of this game are nice and they won't insult anyone. If anything, they invoke quite a lot of nostalgia for those who lived in the 1990 and can remember all the stuff in the house. Plus you can interact with almost every object so, maybe you can get a kick out of throwing stuff around. The game also manages to create a feeling of mystery which is, sadly, completely wasted. Voice acting ingame is nothing to write home about but, since there is only one person speaking through 99% of the game, its fine. The story is pieced together from diaries, audio tapes and sticky notes, which is fine, but the problem is the story itself. *SPOILERS AHEAD* It solely depends on your view of homosexuals. If you are an extremely conservative person, or a person of deep religious conviction, it may stirr something within you. Same goes if you were ever a victim of prejudice against said people. Other than that, the story is boring and the praise it gets is solely derived from the fact that it deals with gay people. Make it a straight couple that has difficulties being together and it really has nothing to it. *END OF SPOILERS* In the end, this game should have been a short novel and it would have been better off that way, since anything besides the weak story has no need to be there. The two stars are for the visuals and the 90's feel, and an additional one for the, albeit wasted, atmosphere.

This game misrepresents itself.

I wasted my money on this game on steam when it had come out on steam. This game wants you to think it is a horror game with its initial presentation. What it really is some liberal arts student's creative writing assignment brought to life in a walking simulator. Here is the plot in one sentience: Your lesbian sister ran off with her lover, and everyone went to find them. Is that worth the price of admission to you? Personally, I still want my money back.
