I kind of liked it but I understand if others dont. I knew nothing about this game when I started witch I think is a good place to start. The story and clue finding draged me through casue I wanted to make sure everyone was OK. It is a play once type game and has zero action but if your the sentimental sort you should get something out of it.
Well, this is it... the game that caused quite a political stir in the gaming community.
I watched a couple of trailers, and was intriqued, Many player reviews at the time were warning of the content and ending, but the game did such a great job with the atmosphere that I thought to myself "How bad could it be?". I'm sure that you the dear reader know the outcome to such a statement! LOL!
I'll be fair... the graphics are good, and the atmosphere was great! Great had the story revolved around something suitably spooky that is. Had this game involved a ghost, murder, or some kind of sinister mystery it might have been a smash hit. However the actual ending involves something quite a bit more mundane, and many of us in the gaming community felt that this game was being used as a vehicle to sell a political message and/or what happens when an SJWs are left to design games! Suppose it doesn't help either that the game can be solved in about 5 minutes if the player knows where to look.
I'm giving it two stars because of the graphics and spooky atmosphere. The rest of it? Ummm... no thanks!
The game is a vary short advanture (walking simulator?). The story is narrated relatively well with good atmosphere. The problem though is the entire game plays out in a way to actually get the story you have to interact with specific items. This leads to the game consisting of having to look at every letter and pick up a lot of random stuff to reveal a few of them. So the length of the game is a matter of how quickly you can rummage through things and weed out the useless stuff.
If you can get the game at a DEEP discount or free like I got it, it might be worth a play through. However; I strongly suggest avoiding or just watching a playthrough for the audio files and avoid the cost all together.
********************************SPOILER**************************************
The narration and atmosphere did not really go together in the end in my opionion.
I played this shortly after it came out, years ago, and I still wish I hadn't. it was boring, with nothing to really solve, just walking through an empty house, picking up the pieces of clues, and finding out by reading and viewing pictures what happened to the house and the people in it. This, sadly, makes you so far removed from events, by only letting you read about events, that you don't really care or even really know, any of the characters, other than the sexual orientation of the protagonist's little sister, which I didn't need to know and didn't care one way or the other about. After playing, I not only didn't care about any of the characters or events, but I wondered why I bothered, why anyone praised this "Game" at all, and I also wanted the time back that I spent on the game, forget the money. Some of the ideas brought up by the girl's story really Irked me, but saying why and how would be spoiling what little there is to spoil, and I'd rather not have people upset with me over that. Suffice it to say, this is a "Game" that only an SJW could love. Only thing I really want to say is to avoid this game at all costs, not just for the money, but the time you will waste, as this is really not a game at all. Save your money and get "Greedfall" or something better to play, which wouldn't take much. I've read visual novels that are FAR more compelling than this drek. Advice to the creators: learn what the phrase "show, don't tell." means and learn that there is FAR MORE to life than sexuality or politics, and that people don't play games to be preached at. Then you MIGHT make something better. if I could give this 1/2 a star or none at all, I would
I started this out just enjoying the exploration of the house, but the story just dragged me in. Saying much of anything about it is heavy spoiler territory, but the way progression and exploration unfolds is pretty neat. There are a few plot threads that kinda don't go anywhere, and it is all over the place at times, but the main story is pretty strong. Full disclosure, though: this one hit pretty close to home; your mileage may vary.
